ONE YEAR OF THE SAFE HOME
Our long held dream just achieved a milestone - one year of our safe home! Since November 2018, our Safe Home team consisting of the caretaker and staff have cared for 21 women and their twenty-three children.
Through counselling sessions that focus on recovery and rehabilitation, the Safe Home has helped women for the past year get back on their feet and live productive lives filled with dignity and happiness.
During our one year anniversary celebrations, the Safe Home team invited friends and partners who have been a part of our journey since the Safe Home was just a dream! During our one year celebration, our friends and partners had the opportunity to hear from three survivors who shared what their lives were like before they sought shelter at the Safe Home - and how it changed them.
To end the celebration on a high note, Pavani and Pallavi (the caretaker's daughters) entertained the women with a song and dance celebration that everyone thoroughly enjoyed.
We would like to share with you the story of a woman named Eva (name changed to protect the individual). Eva got married at age 12 and gave birth to her first child a year later. From the beginning of her marriage, she faced severe mental and physical abuse which culminated in being thrown out of the house, along with her two children.
After a year apart, he forcibly took her back, and they had more children together... the abuse intensified and turned sexual in nature. Unable to bear the abuse any longer, Eva sought shelter in our Safe Home. After intensive counselling and care provided for the children, Eva has finally found the strength to come to face all that happened to her and pave her own way for her future.
