X’s Courage: Journey fro a Survivor of Trafficking to a Community Advocate
X, a resident of Madarihat, Alipurduar, grew up in a financially vulnerable family and worked in a tea garden during her childhood. After joining Jabala’s adolescent girls’ group, she gained awareness regarding child protection. Subsequently, she enrolled in a free residential housekeeping course in Siliguri, which promised guaranteed job placement in Bangalore.
One day, X and 55 other girls were instructed to report to New Jalpaiguri (NJP) station for their journey to Bangalore to pursue these employment opportunities. Upon reaching NJP, X sensed something was amiss and recalled the lessons learned during awareness sessions on trafficking. She immediately informed the Jabala office, which, with the assistance of the Railway Protection Force, rescued the girls and arrested two alleged traffickers. Through counseling, trauma support, and mentorship from Jabala, X regained her confidence and became a community volunteer. Today, she:
• Leads awareness sessions on unsafe migration, child trafficking, and child marriage.
• Conducts home visits and facilitates adolescent girls’ groups. • Supports the re-enrolment of school dropouts and visits Integrated Child Development Scheme (ICDS) centres to identify vulnerable children.
X’s journey demonstrates how timely reporting, awareness, and consistent support can prevent trafficking and transform survivors into empowered community leaders.
Many resource-poor and vulnerable girls face the risk of trafficking; our support can empower them to become confident individuals who contribute to their communities.
