Elephant Chaser's Daughter
Elephant Chaser's Daughter

We are proud to announce the worldwide release of Shilpa Raj's debut memoir, The Elephant Chaser's Daughter. When you are a female born into a poor Indian family, the odds are already stacked greatly against you. Saved by her grandmother from being killed at birth, Shilpa's life took many unexpected turns through her early years.

"Shilpa Raj is a powerful new voice for human dignity and opportunity and against the appalling and demeaning mistreatment of women worldwide. An important and deeply affecting book narrated in a moving and intimate style."

– Sir Ken Robinson, Author and Educator

The human drama captured in this memoir is nothing short of amazing – a young woman’s struggle between the two worlds of her existence. The values with which she is being brought up at Shanti Bhavan come in conflict with the life of servitude and injustice experienced - and expected - by her family. Pulled in opposite directions, and torn between despair and dreams, Shilpa finally makes a choice for her escape. But is she strong enough to stand up to the people she loves, and pursue what she wants?

At its heart, The Elephant Chaser's Daughter is about hope, when all seems lost. Written with raw honesty and grit, this is a deeply moving memoir of a young woman confronting her ‘untouchable’ status in a caste-based society, and her aspirations for a good future.

The book has received excellent reviews and high rankings both on Amazon–India and Goodreads. We hope you will encourage and support Shilpa, the graduate of Shanti Bhavan's second batch, in spreading the word about her book and her memorable story.

You can find The Elephant Chaser's Daughter at Amazon.com and Barnes & Noble.

Daughters of Destiny premiers on Netflix July 28!
Daughters of Destiny premiers on Netflix July 28!

Dear Friend,

I have exciting news to share! Five students of Shanti Bhavan will be featured in the upcoming Netflix documentary series, Daughters of Destiny, directed by Oscar-award winner Vanessa Roth with music by acclaimed artist A. R. Rahman. The series captures the stories of these young women and the incredible change Shanti Bhavan has made in their lives.

Daughters of Destiny premieres on Friday, July 28th, but you can catch a sneak peek by watching the trailer now.

This is a huge honor and a wonderful opportunity to spotlight Shanti Bhavan’s 20 years of work and the lives we have impacted.

Please take a moment to share the trailer with family and friends – help us to spread the word about Daughters of Destiny and celebrate its premiere. Stay tuned for more information about how you can attend - or host - a watch party and other ways to get involved.

Thank you for believing in us and making all of this possible. We have exciting days ahead of us and I can’t wait to share with you the next chapter in Shanti Bhavan's journey!

With gratitude,

Ajit George

Shiney & Kishore visiting the GlobalGiving office

"On my first day at Shanti Bhavan, Auntie Raji, our preschool teacher, gave the class ten pieces of chocolate and encouraged us to share with our new classmates. Soundarya, my future best friend, immediately turned to me, and offered me half of her chocolate. From that day forward, I’ve continued to find more joy in sharing with my classmates than receiving an individual gift," Shiney reflected at the GlobalGiving offices last week. Now, as a junior in high school, she and her classmate Kishore, shared the Shanti Bhavan culture of generosity, love, and gratitude with everyone they met on their recent trip to the US.

After speaking at the Tufaan dance competition in Chicago, Shiney and Kishore met the GlobalGiving Team in DC, which was quite the treat as we celebrate our 6 month anniversary of being listed as a "Superstar" on the GG platform! They told stories of growing up at SB and shared their ambitions for the future: Shiney will become a pediatrician and Kishore a tech entrepreneur. They helped us all to pause and reflect on what an education can provide.

Shiney ended her speech with a brave proclamation for her future: "Today, I am a brave and independent young woman, and I will continue to fight for what I believe in. Shanti Bhavan has taught me the value of confidence, fearlessness, and equality. I will fight for my mother so that one day, my daughters will never be forced to live a life they didn't choose."

It is because of your support that our children believe their dreams can become a reality. It is because of people like you that our girls grow up to be powerful young women. The Shanti Bhavan family thanks you from the bottom of our hearts.

Yours truly,

Meg VanDeusen and the Shanti Bhavan Team

Thank You!
Thank You!

Thank you for supporting the children of Shanti Bhavan this year.

Our students have been studying hard, but as the holiday season approaches they made sure to have good fun too, bursting fire crackers for Diwali and surprising the little children with a visit from Santa Claus himself.

With the holidays upon us, the end of the semester gives us all a chance to reflect on the year. Please enjoy as one of our school leaders shares with you her biggest accomplishment this year:

My name is Bhuvaneshwari and I am in grade twelve at Shanti Bhavan Residential School in Baliganapalli, India. I love playing all sports in my school and am most proud of being the captain of our women’s soccer team. Back home, girls are often told they aren't as good at sports as boys are. We are expected to be quiet and obedient. But, I won't let people who think “girls can’t even run back and forth" and don't belong on the sports field determine how I feel about myself.

At Shanti Bhavan, I am able to express my thoughts and talents without feeling shy. My school expects me to be equal to the boys in physical and mental strength. I am a girl and that means I am expected to play hard, to keep going when it is difficult or tough, to put effort into any work I do. I believe in myself and all the other girls at Shanti Bhavan who have the thirst to win.

Shanti Bhavan has taught me to be confident and brave in the face of adversity. I am motivated to achieve my goals. I will overcome these obstacles by joining a college soccer team next year. Before I used to feel like because “I’m a girl” I cannot do anything as an athlete but today I feel like because “I am a girl” I can make a difference.

We at Shanti Bhavan know that our accomplishments would not be possible without you. Your generosity enables children like Bhuvaneshwari to dream big, and to succeed. As the year comes to a close, all of us – children and staff – look forward to an exciting 2017. We hope you will join us!

We wish you a wonderful holiday season,
Dr. George, Staff, and Children
