 Executive Summary

In the last quarter of 2025, the Foundation for Healthier Families (FHF) successfully implemented a sexual health rights program targeting 100 deaf girls in Kakamega County, Kenya. The initiative aimed to promote awareness, access, and protection of sexual and reproductive health rights (SRHR) among deaf adolescent girls and young women. Through inclusive education, healthcare linkages, and community advocacy, the program empowered participants to make informed decisions about their bodies and futures, while addressing systemic barriers such as communication challenges, stigma, and limited access to disability-friendly services.

Outcomes and Achievements

  • 100 deaf girls received comprehensive SRHR education in accessible formats.
  • Increased confidence: Participants reported improved ability to discuss sexual health issues openly.
  • Healthcare access: 60% of participants utilized SRHR services during the program period.
  • Community shift: Parents and leaders expressed greater willingness to support deaf girls’ rights.
  • Challenges
  • Limited resources for scaling up beyond the initial 100 girls.
  • Persistent cultural taboos around discussing sexuality.
  • Need for sustained funding to continue training healthcare providers.

Recommendations

  1. Scale Up: Expand the program to reach more deaf girls across Kakamega and neighboring counties.
  2. Policy Integration: Advocate for inclusion of disability-sensitive SRHR in county health budgets.
  3. Sustainability: Establish long-term partnerships with schools and health facilities.
  4. Monitoring & Evaluation: Strengthen data collection on SRHR outcomes among deaf girls.
  5. Community Ownership: Continue engaging parents and leaders to foster supportive environments.
