The project will be implemented in Kakamega County, Kenya. The primary beneficiaries are 100 deaf and hard to hear girls both in and out of school. FHF will train them on life skills, sexual reproductive health rights and psycho-social support . They will become knowledgeable of their rights and with skills on how to advocate for them whenever need be. This project will enhance their self awareness and consciousness of surrounding environments hence development to their full potential.
Girls and women with disability are among the highly vulnerable and marginalized groups in the community. They are mostly invisible among those promoting rights of persons living with disability and those promoting gender rights. The recent HIV indicator survey report indicates high rate of infections, defilement, rape and teen pregnancies among young girls in Western Kenya. Among them are girls living with disabilities including those that are deaf /with hearing impairment.
To achieve meaning change, we will address their concerns through capacity building and protecting them from gender based violence, promoting their sexual reproductive health and rights, HIV/AIDs prevention and access to education. FHF will provide life skills and sexual reproductive health and rights training to enable them to be firm, assertive, knowledgeable and proactive .They will also know when, where, why how and to whom they should seek support.
The deaf will have a good understanding of SRHR issues and improve their well being. The community will change attitude and understand the significant role people living with disability can play in changing the many lives around them thus establish collective role in building demand for protection of the deaf and hearing impaired girls and women. If given equal opportunity rights and protection, they will be able to develop to their full potentials.
