Introduction:
Through this project, Voices of the Defenseless continues to give survivors of abuse and human trafficking a platform to reclaim their voices through storytelling, advocacy, and education. This project empowers survivors not only to heal but to lead conversations that challenge stigma, demand justice, and inspire societal change.
Progress Updates: Storytelling as Healing and Advocacy:
Between April and July 2025, we successfully facilitated:
1 storytelling workshops attended by survivors of abuse and trafficking.
12 survivors shared their personal stories through poetry and short narratives.
These stories were compiled into a small booklet used during advocacy forums, sparking meaningful discussions on justice and healing.
Advocacy and Awareness:
We engaged local communities, churches, and women's groups in conversations on recognizing signs of abuse and trafficking. Over 50 individuals participated in these forums. Survivors shared their testimonies, fostering empathy and understanding within communities that often silence victims.
Collaborations:
We partnered with women shelterand local organizations offering legal aid and counseling to ensure survivors have continued access to support beyond our storytelling sessions. We referred 7 survivors for additional services such as shelter, legal representation, and medical care.
Challenges:
Limited funding restricted the number of workshops and reduced our ability to publish survivors' stories more widely.
Survivors often fear backlash or stigma, making participation cautious and delicate. Building trust takes time, and we continue to prioritize trauma-informed care.
Looking Ahead:
With continued support, our next steps include:
Publishing a larger anthology of survivor stories for advocacy use.
Expanding workshops to reach youth and rural communities.
Creating digital spaces (videos, podcasts) for survivors to share their voices globally.
Impact Story:
One survivor shared:
"Telling my story was like opening the door to my freedom. I carried shame for years. Today, I carry courage instead. I hope someone hears me and knows they are not alone." — A survivor from our May 2025 workshop.
