We're partnering once again with Youth Care Africa in Nairobi to launch the Sew Bee-Cause - Sew Empowered program. With your support, we will help set up a community sewing centre where youth leaders will learn to sew Angel Wings reusable menstrual kits, deliver menstrual health workshops, and train peer educators. This sustainable, locally run project will ensure girls can manage menstruation with dignity, stay in school, and break the cycle of stigma-while creating skills that last for years.
In Nairobi's low-income communities, many girls miss school during their periods due to lack of menstrual products, taboos, and shame. Youth Care Africa already runs outreach programs on adolescent health and menstrual hygiene, but they rely on donations of kits from us at Sew Bee-Cause. Without training or tools, they cannot produce kits locally or expand their workshops. This project will shift them from depending on handouts to leading a locally run, sustainable menstrual health initiative.
By training and supporting local facilitators Sew Bee-Cause can ensure that the Sew Empowered program can continue empowering generations of young women for years to come. In supporting these local facilitators to continue this work at a purpose designed facility it will create a safe drop in space for youth support and education around menstrual health and hygiene, helping to tackle a long standing problem of period inequity, sexual inequality and subsequent long term issues as a consequence.
By shifting from dependency on imported donations to local production, this project builds a sustainable, community-owned solution. Each year, hundreds of girls will gain kits and knowledge to stay in school with dignity. Trained youth leaders will continue to produce, educate, and train others-spreading confidence and dismantling stigma. Over time, ripple effects will empower mothers, sisters, and entire communities across Nairobi.
