Setu News Letter June 2013


A new initiative has been taken by Setu in this quarter the Integrated Skills Development Program in association with Modelama at our at Salarpur centre It is a skilling programme for youth who can get employment after completing a one month training and Certification on High-end Industrial Machines. The project started on 27th May 2013 and we have since completed two batches involving 52 students, the batches run for four hours a day.   


Environmental Activities: The Environment Club at Setu organised the earth week to mark the occasion of Earth day on 22nd April 2013. Five competitions were organised among the children who participated in:

  • Green initiative Award
  • Best slogan/ creative writing
  • Best charts/Modals
  • Best bookmark
  • Best article/ information

Students have shown tremendous response and made unusual working models like “Open solar cooker” and “electrolysis of water”. For the green initiative students had planted seasonal saplings. The winner in each categories were awarded with green slashes and a bamboo saplings.

The environment club was also involved on the “No Tobacco Day” awareness drive, they created anti-tobacco posters and a special assembly was held to create awareness of the bad effect of consuming tobacco.

On 6th of June, International Environment Day the students at Setu celebrated and created awareness of protection of their environment thru activities at the school. A bulletin board was created and explained to all student present on the occasion, apart from this the Gardening team also ensured that the green cover at the schools was maintained.

Salad Day : On 7th May 2013 Setu children celebrated Salad day. The objective of this activity was to teach students the importance of vegetables and to inculcate habit of having it in their meals. Children brought vegetables from home and with the help of teachers they prepared the salad and enjoyed in group.

Health Check-up Camp: On 14th May 2013 General health check up camp was organised with the help of HCL team and Fortis Hospital, Noida. Students of all classes were examined and some of them were advised general medicines. Medicines were also provided by them.

Founder’s day : On 9th April Setu celebrated its 6th founder’s day function at IMA Auditorium, Sector 31, Noida. Ms. Madhok, Principal, Mayoor  School and Ms. Vimlesh Sharma, Nithari Pradhan were the guest of honour. Teachers and students from Global International School and Mayoor School also attended the function. Program started by lightening of the lamp by the guest of honours. Students performed different cultural events and the parent cheered and applauded the performances. The excitement of the parents to see their children performing on stage did not go un-noticed. This was the first time when the students of Setu performed on the Founders. Not only students but
teachers and staff were equally participated in it with full enthusiasm.

Awards were presented to outstanding students during the last year and Best student of the year was given to Ishrat amongst the girls and Akash amongst the boys. Neha student from J J Colony tuition centre was acknowledged on passing class X Board Examination.

HCL T Spring Fest: HCL T organized a cultural program for NGOs on 20th April 2013. Our school also participated in the event and presented four different cultural program before the audience. Students participated with full
enthusiasm and their performance was lauded by the audience present. The occasion was great learning opportunity for our children and they were presented gifts and certificates for their performance.

Students of Setu also participated in the “I CAN” a function organised by Vidya and Child.  A short movie on child labour and animation films photography ‘kabad se jugad” were part of the fest. Our students interacted with other children, it was a great learning opportunity for our children and they also participated in events and won prizes, apart from enjoying the show.

IT Convocation and Certification: On 27th April 2013, students at the IT centre were awarded certificates on the completion of the first batch of Tally as well as the Basic IT Course.  It was a day to remember because we had
successfully completed our first batch of Tally.

Two months later on 27th June 2013, The students of IT who completed the short course in Movie maker and Office Publisher as part of a summer camp In June were awarded certificates. The student enjoyed this course which was held in three weekend of June 2013.

Kudos to the IT team lead by Geetanjali – GREAT JOB DONE.

Student Volunteering: On 3rd May 2013, students of Class 8 Mayoor School Noida students visited our School and performed a joint activity on physics and biology. The theme was "Reflection of light". Experiments were conducted using prism, concave, convex mirror & lenses. The Newton’s disc was also used to display rainbow colours and dispersion of light with that disc. The biology exercise was on the human eye and this was shared thru well labelled diagram in chart. They also discussed about the compost pit along with micro-organism and their merits & demerits. A quiz was organised among students, in which our students gave good response.

Setu students performed remarkable and were appreciated with good remarks to them. They also enjoyed a lot with our students.

As part of their association with Setu during the academic year 2013 -2014, On 17th May 2013 Students of Sri Ram
Millennium School Noida participated in a volunteering activity with our school. They taught Madhubani art painting to our students. Their class VIII students along with art teacher conducted the activity and we happy with the talents displayed of our students.

Volunteers at Setu: Students from VIT Vellore participated in a month long volunteering program as part of their summer training at SETU. They conducted field visits, Held camps for the promotion of IT and other vocation courses, attended Blood donation camp, arranged and dispatched clothes for Rehabilitation of people who were affected by the Uttarakhand Calamity. They also helped in office administration as well. They did a wonderful job with full dedication and enthusiasm and were also e very open for feed back. At the end of the month they were given volunteering certificates. 

Some other students from different schools of Noida like Sun Rise, APJ and Vishwa Bharti participated also
participated in a summer camp. They helped in creating of artefacts for fund raising.

Summer Camp at SETU : The annual Setu summer Camp was held from 10th May 2013 to 29th May 2013 , This year, While one set of students were taught to create best out of waste, glass painting, flower making, embroidery, another one participated in learning to dance. A set of students were trained on how to create Madhubani painting by an expert. Students made few paintings. Apart from this the students also created artefacts which shall be sold for fund raising during the year. On the last day the students put up an exhibition of the items created at the summer camp.

 Teachers Skill Updation

  1. Visit at Mayoor School and Millennium School: During the quarter a number of interschool visits were made by our teachers. The teachers of Setu visited Mayoor School pre primary section and Primary section to observation the teaching methodology followed there and how to enhance their teaching practices and to learn teaching aids. A similar visit was made to Millennium school to understand the setup of a science lab and thereafter to the Science and EVS teacher visited Cambridge School Noida to see learning presented thru a play by their class VII students.

  2. Workshop for teachers: On 28th June 2013, Pratham organisation supported Setu in      conducting teacher’s workshop at Nithari Campus on “Today’s scenario on education system and learning skills”. Mr. Faiyaz and Mr. Ashutosh Upadhyay conducted the workshop. They teachers were apprised of how they can adopt activity based learning in all subjects.

Students Corner
 
Rani was 12 years old in Class 7th in Government  School when she joined Setu tuition center. Her Father Dinesh Ravi Das is driver and mother Ms. Sunita Devi is house wife. She has one sister and two brothers, one is in class 8th
and other is in class 4th of Government  School.  She helps her mother in household work. She likes to study but when asked what her aim she said not yet decided. Her Favourite food is Dal – Chawal. She prefers to be at home when others are playing. Rani is very calm and quiet child. In the academic year 2013-14 Rani is in class 8th. She is a mediocre student. This year she has attended general health check up camp, Dental camp and eye camp. Her reports were fine in all the checkups. 


When she joined Setu Rinki was 12 years old studies in class 5th in a government school. Her mother works in a
company. She has one elder brother and younger sister who is studying in class III. Her mother Urmila Devi is the only earning member in the family. She does all household work and she enjoys cooking. She hardly gets time to watch TV. She likes to play with her peer group. She sings well and said she wants to be a Doctor. In the year 2013 she has been promoted to class 7th. She has shown improvement in English reading and writing. Apart from studies she takes interest in stitching. She takes interest in all the activities conducted at the centre. She says she has benefited from Setu tuition center.


Shalini was in class IV when she joined SETU. Her father Ram Nath is a raj mistri and mother is a cook. She has
one elder sister and one elder brother studying in other schools. She likes studying, playing and at times she helps her mother in kitchen work. She does cleaning at home on daily basis. Along with studies she is good at drawing and other activities. She won 1st prize in quiz competition conducted by Dell. In the academic year 2012-13 she scored 92% and stood 1st in her class. According to her class teacher she is obedient and an excellent girl. She participated in all the competitions and won prizes in many of them. Her family says Setu has given a new hope to our
daughter. 

 

Meet our Facilitators

Pooja, young and most energetic teacher of class 1st is resident of Nithari.  She stays with her family. She joined Setu in March 2012. Since then she is working with complete dedication and sincerity. According to her students
grasping power is very high, they are eager to learn new things and gets excited while participating activities. She further says that introduction of different clubs during assembly is very innovative idea. Clubs like Moral education, Science, Hindi, English, and Environment etc gives more information about the subject.   

Pooja says she has learnt new things from children like making paper bags, flower making etc. Her confidence
level has improved at Setu. As this is her first job so she also learnt how to be a part of group not only that there is a change in her nature also like, she is more polite than before and her tone has gone down. Training conducted at Setu has improved her professionally. She liked training on English communication, Education relation to nature, and many more that has impacted her lot.

Distribution of class according to theme at Setu School attracts her the most. Each class is given a theme and teachers and students are expected to decorate the class accordingly for the whole year. She wants to be  associated with Setu for long time.


Ragini, our Senior Hindi teacher is associated with Setu since last five years. She stays in Sector 82 with her
family. Her husband is a businessman and they are blessed with two daughters.She has a passion for teaching
students of Setu School travels more than 10 kms one way to spend time with the children. She says, Setu is taking care of these children so well and no other organisation can do. Over the years there has been improvement in the children they come neat and clean and most of them can now understand English and many of them can speak also. Their lifestyle has been changed after joining Setu. 

Her own confidence level has improved. Now she feels confident in taking all primary subjects along with art and craft, Music etc. She takes care of cultural programs. She is discipline in-charge of whole School.

 According to her “Setu is her second home”.
