From the Editorial Desk:  

Dear Friends,     

It gives me immense pleasure to present to you the Winter Edition of Setu Marches. This news letter has evolved over the period of time and gives an insight to what we do at Setu. We have tried are best to capture the events and bring to you an update on what transpired doing the last few months.

Dear reader I want to share that we at Setu ensure our students get safe and secure environment for their growth. We provide fearless atmosphere where they feel comfortable to share their concerns with their teachers or even with the head of the school. Teachers also act as counselors for them and guide them about their safety issues which are very important to teach them after seeing the present scenario of our society.

Volunteering at Setu: Mayoor School On 21st Nov 2012 July 2012 students of Class VI Mayoor School along with their English Teacher from visited Setu Shiksha Jyoti Kendra, Nithari and conducted an English activity. The teacher had covered grammar through different activities. Students from both the schools interacted and helped each other in the exercise and enjoyed a lot.

Mayoor School Noida invited our students for the adventure camp on 5th and 6th December 2012. Students from junior classes participated in the event. This was first of a kind for the students of Setu.

On 12th Dec 2012 Class VIII students of Mayoor School along with their Maths Teacher interacted with our VIII class students.

Cambridge School, Noida : Visit to Old age Home: Our students along with Cambridge students visited an Old age Home in Mayur Vihar. They entertained the inmates of the old home. Senior citizens also shared their experiences with them and narrated moral based stories.

Events at Setu 

Salaam Namaste Quiz:  On 15th Dec 2012 Setu students had participated at Salaam Namaste quiz competition. One of our student won IIIrd prize and one student got a consolation prize in Painting event. Setu was given a shield for participation.

Children’s Day Celebration: On 17th Nov 2012 children’s day was celebrated at Nithari campus. Students from Salarpur and Tuition center were also a part of the program. Function started with children’s performances and followed by award ceremony. Three students were awarded the Master Atul excellence award for overall outstanding performance for the year 2011-2012.

Diwali Mela: On 3rd November 2012 Diwali Mela was organized for our students. Volunteers from different corporate also helped in making the event successful. There were many stalls for food, games and Diwali related materials. People from Nithari and students from different schools also came and enjoy the Mela. The objective behind it was to give our students an experience of organizing as well as participating in a Mela. This experience gave them a chance to learn social behavior, discipline at the same time how to be a good host.   

Workshop on Environment: On 7th Dec 2012 Staff of I- volunteers organized a workshop on environment. Through different activities they create awareness among students on environment and responsibilities as an individual towards protection of the environment. A skit was conducted to explain the whole concept and involved the students. The overall session was very interesting and enjoyable.

Workshop for girls: On 10th December 2012 Lioness club organized a small workshop for adolescent girls. They showed them how to make hygienic and economic home made pads. They also taught how to make a new lipstick out of used ones and how to make envelopes for gifting purpose.

Launch of Road Safety Campaign and Film making workshop by PVR On 20th September 2012 students of Setu along with their teachers visited PVR for the launch of a Road Safety campaign, Our school was among the privileged few who had the opportunity to attend an orientation session conducted by Cine Art on the issue of Road Safety, the first ever initiative to sensitize children on the subject.

The function was graced by Honorable CM, Govt. of NCT of Delhi, Smt. Sheila Dikshit and noted social activist & renowned classical dancer, Mallika Sarabhai.

PVR Nest works on various issues concerning the environment and children and engages with young adolescents across India by training them on visual and performing arts and turns them into creative ambassadors YOUNG LEADERS of tomorrow who believe in Being the Students of Setu attended this workshop during December from 17th to 21st and made a documentary film on Road Safety.

Christmas Celebration: On 22nd Dec 2012 teachers celebrated Christmas at both the centers. One teacher played the role of Santa and distributed Goodies to all the students. Teachers had also decorated their school with the help of the students.

Blood Donation Camps: Setu as part of its Health Initiatives organised blood donation camps in collaboration with Rotary Blood Bank Noida. During the Quarter October to December 2012 we organised 5 camp in different corporate like DELL, MetLife and NIIT. The employees had shown great enthusiasm during the camp leading to donation of 558 units of blood.

Health Camp:  A General Health camp was organised on 26th November 2012 by PHD Chambers in collaboration with DS group for Nithari center.  Doctor also provided medicines to the children and their parents.

Go Green Project Environment team of our school is working hard on its project. Lots of initiatives have been taken by them to share the knowledge with other similar schools. On 17th December 2012 the team conducted a workshop for other NGOs on Environment. Nearby drains are also cleaned twice a week on a regular basis. It’s a small initiative to motivate the villagers to keep their lane clean.

Corporate Volunteering Visits: During the Quarter October to December 2012, a large no of Corporate Volunteers disseminated their valuable knowledge to and spent a lot of time in Activities with the children and students at Setu. Volunteering Activities during the Quarter October to December 2012 included:

Blood Donation Camps at 5 organizations

Paper bag making activity at two corporate

Foot ball and Cricket match with a corporate

Setu Diwali Mela in which employees from five corporates participated

Diwali fundraising stalls at 41 places

Apart from the above employees of various corporates participated in the Christmas events, Children’s day functions and the birthday celebration events at Setu.

Corporate Support: We are grateful to Mentor for their support in arranging stationary items for our students and RMSI for arranging sports items like foot ball and carom board etc. Support was also provided for the Birthday Celebrations. Employees of DS Group took over the role of Santa for the Setu children and gifted them with stationery items, books, bags and toys for our students thereby fulfilling their wish. Employees from Hilton Hotels distributed Cakes and Muffins to the children of Setu at Salarpur.

Winter Initiative : Courtesy the support of Mentor, RMSI and Make my Trip employees we were able to get a SMILE on the faces of many Juggi dwellers. Clothes were distributed to the needy in nearby slum area and to some of our students who are from needy families.

Meet Santosh Mahi In charge Junior wing Setu Shiksha Jyoti Kendra Nithari:  Mahi joined Setu as nursery teacher in 2011. She stays with her husband who works in a private company and is blessed with a son. A very responsible and sincere teacher, she also looks after the administrative issues. She says she has learned a lot after joining Setu. She follows the teaching practices what she has learned at teachers training. According to her at Setu every body gets opportunities for skill up gradation which is very different from other NGOs. She also believes that volunteers play a vital role in the learning process of these children. Volunteers share their ideas which help them in learning better. At Setu she gets support from management and feels like part of a family. She sees her future at Setu.

Meet Reena Chauhan - Facilitator at Salarpur center is really hard working and dedicated teacher. She stays in a joint family in Noida. Her Husband works in a private company in Dehradun and she has a 3 year old daughter. Her family is very supportive and wants her to be at Setu as they feel the atmosphere is very safe and comfortable and she also gets chance to improve her skills. She teaches with full enthusiasm and takes extra efforts for their learning’s. She lays emphasis on Activity based exercises for better learning. She says she has learned a lot about activity based teachings through various teachers trainings organised by Setu. She is very satisfied being at Setu.

Setu Students Speak

Aakash is 12 years old in class Vth. His father Nipin is a plumber and mother Suman is a maid. He has a younger sister studying in class IV in another school. He belongs to Bengal. He is a bright student of our school and wants to be a singer cum actor but at the same time he wants to fulfill his father’s dream of becoming an architect. In school he likes to participate in all the activities. He says we have lots of workshops for students through which he learns a lot. He named lot of workshops like, consumer rights, road safety, environment etc. He says all these type of activities in the school makes my school very special.

Mithlesh Sharma is 16 years old in class VIII. He is in Setu from the day school has started. His father Mr. Umesh Sharma is carpenter, and mother Indu Devi sharma is a house wife. He has an elder brother and two elder sisters. His aim is to be an artist but his father wants him to take up the same profession i.e. carpentry. He says he has learned a lot at Setu. His feels that his English communication has improved because of studying at Setu. He likes cricket and plays when ever he gets time as his father tries to keep him engage with carpentry after school. He is also a member of environment committee and for that he comes daily in the evening to take care of plants. He is enjoying his learning at Setu.

MOHINI daughter of Prabhu Dayal and Prabha joined Setu tuition center at the age of 12 years in class Vth. At present she is in class IX. Their combined family income is Rs. 4000 pm. She stays in JJ Colony, Near Mandir Sector – 16 Noida. She loves to read, dance and sing. Her ambition in life is to become a Doctor. She is an intelligent girl and comes regularly in tuition classes. She is in Rajkiye Madhyamic Kanya Vidhyalaya, No. 3 Sarojini Nagar. She has shown improvement in all the subjects. She takes interest in GK and other creative things. Other than her studies she has learnt “Kroshiya work”, foot mat, Rakhi, decorative pieces, Diya decoration, candle making and wall hangings at tuition center.
