Project Uday – Education of Under-served Children

Under project Uday at the Setu Shikshajyoti Kendra Nithari Online classes for students continues as schools have still not opened after Covid 19 lockdown. Senior classes are being conducted on zoom while junior classes are on whatsapp. Assignments and tests are also conducted online. Though it’s little time consuming but teachers are trying their best to take their classes as per their plan and monitor progress of the students.

Online Activities – with schools being closed due to lockdown, the initiative of holding online classes started. Our objective was to ensure maximum participation and make the class more interactive to generate interest among students. This helped in improved attendance along with the student’s performance.

Science Activities: with no physical contact practical activies started taking a back seat so the Teachers started making efforts to make their subjects interesting thru activity based learning. The result of such efforts could be be seen in improved attendence.

Online Volunteering   FIL has organized guest lectures for senior classes. They had covered the topics like presentation skills and motivational sessions. This online workshop helped students a lot. One of our student’s quote after attending the workshop “What I learnt is that how can I present myself in front of audience, how can I interact with audience in such a way that they would be able to get some information from my presentation. Also I understood - First impression is last impression, practice makes the man perfect, too much colours should not be there in a good slide and so many other useful things. Thank you so much. Riya Class 11”.

Volunteering classes: Volunteers from PWC are taking online classes on every Saturday. They are giving their expert guidance to senior students in Accounts, Business studies, Economic, Maths and Science. Classes are held on Google meet. Our students are benefiting from these classes. Volunteers resolve their doubts and give them assignments for their practice.

Board results were declared for class 12th and 10th in July 2020, our students did exceeding well. The highest score was 90% and 9 students out of 10 got above 60%. In class 10th also the students fared well, 8 students out of 12 scored above 60%. Result shows the hard work and efforts taken by students and teachers. We congratulate them on their grand success.

Independence Day: This year we celebrated Independence Day with limited employees maintaining social distancing norms. Few of them joined us online. Students had prepared the program online with the help of teachers, which was shown on projector.

Employee development: In this quarter we emphasised on employee development. We got support from a corporate. They organised online sessions on- presentation skills, human resources, project management, coping with Covid-19, diversity and inclusion, ethics and business conduct.

Teachers are focusing on their self-development. Every day they are learning and exploring new ways of teaching, conducting tests, monitoring their work, motivating their students each day, parents counselling.

Challenge during lockdown

Availability of phone and mobile data is a big challenge. Many a times net connectivity is low, phone battery gets discharged

Success stories

Shalini appeared for Class 12 CBSE Board examination in 2020. She had joined Setu in the year 2011 in class 4th. Before joining Setu she was an extremely shy girl but with the support, love and affection that she received from the teachers here in Setu made her grow day by day. Shalini is not only academically a bright student she is equally good in sports and other co- curricular activities. She has always managed to stand up as a winner in whatever activity she participated. Shalini Belongs to a family of 4 members. She lost her father in an accident at a very young age of 5. After her father’s sudden demise, the financial condition of the family deteriorated. Her mother being a single parent started working as a maid in order to feed her 3 children and support their education. Her uncle also supports the family in every possible way.

When Shalini joined Setu looking at her family condition and child’s eagerness towards learning made Setu decide to provide free education to Shalini till class 12.  Shalini performance was outstanding in 10th CBSE Board in which she had scored 77% and in 12 CBSE Board she made every one proud by scoring 90% which is incredible.

Shalini is very thankful to the Setu family for the support and for providing her a platform where she could present her talent with their help. She says Setu is my home where I feel protected all the time. She says Setu has also given her friends who have always been there in all her ups and downs.

Teena appeared for class 12 CBSE Board examination in 2020. She joined Setu in the year 2008 in class 1st. Teena was very scared coming to school & was also a shy girl but the love and affection of the teachers helped Teena and the school became second home for her. Teena was an average student but she was very good in co-curricular activities. Teena belongs to a family of 5 members. Her father works as a driver and her mother is a maid. The financial condition of the family is not very good and she being an average student was asked by her family to leave the school but teachers of Setu always encouraged her & supported her in all the circumstances.

Teena’s performance in class 10 CBSE Board was not good she got compartment in one subject and the child was again told to dropout but Setu encouraged her, paid her compartment fee which her parents refused to pay, talked to her parents and asked them to support her and help her with all the difficulties that she was facing. Now in class 12 CBSE Board this girl proved herself by securing 70.4% marks which made not only her family but the entire Setu family proud.

Teena is very thankful to the entire Setu team and Says that “Lifted me up when I was weak, you gave me faith because you believed in me and everything I am because you loved me”.
