Bringing Joy, Creating Smiles, Wearing Purple

By Allie Weiner | Cedar Village Foundation, Administrative Assistant

Research shows that individuals who do volunteer work have lower mortality rates, greater functional ability, and lower rates of depression later in life than those who do not volunteer. Older volunteers are the most likely to receive greater benefits from volunteering because they are provided with physical and social activity and a sense of purpose, according to a report by the Corporation for National and Community Service.

Cedar Village’s senior volunteer program provides the opportunity for the residents to live with purpose through giving back to the community by traveling to organizations like the Ronald McDonald House, Crayons to Computers, homeless shelters, and much more. Many of our volunteers, averaging age 80 and older, were active volunteers in their community before moving to Cedar Village. It is never too late to do good for the community, and individuals who are new to volunteering are always welcome. Or volunteers always wear their purple shirts and their smiles while sharing stories and bonding with the individuals they are serving.

We are proud of our senior volunteers and the difference they make in the community!
