Wheels in Motion: Building Skills, Changing Lives

By Erin Hegarty | CEO

Dear Supporters,

In May, Wheelchairs for Kids generously supported Mama Respond by funding the travel of two occupational therapists to Kenya to upskill our local team. The training proved to be an incredible success, with far-reaching outcomes that continue to shape our work today.

Our team was deeply receptive and eager to learn, and they have since applied the knowledge and techniques shared by the OTs in practical, life-changing ways.

Since the visit, our team has assembled and fitted 166 wheelchairs across various regions of Kenya, ensuring that children with disabilities receive safe, customised mobility aids suited to their individual needs. This achievement reflects not only their growing expertise but also the ripple effect of capacity-building. Each new skill learned has directly translated into improved quality of care and greater reach within the communities we serve.

The enthusiasm and confidence among our local staff have grown immensely, as has their ability to assess and fit children independently.

Families have expressed immense gratitude for the dignity, mobility, and inclusion that these wheelchairs have brought to their children’s lives.

We’re now preparing for our next shipment of wheelchairs, scheduled to leave in February, which will enable us to continue expanding this impact and reaching even more children across Kenya. The ongoing collaboration with Wheelchairs for Kids has proven invaluable, and we look forward to building on this strong foundation to create lasting change for children with disabilities and their families.
