A Wheelchair isn't just a Mobility Device

By Erin Hegarty | CEO

Great news! Our wheelchair shipment has been successfully imported to Kitengela. And even better news, we have conducted wheelchair assembly and fitting training in collaboration with Australian occupational therapists from Wheelchairs for Kids Australia (WFK).

The WFK training on wheelchair assembly and fitting took place from June 2nd to 6th, 2025, at Kitengela Sub-County Hospital. The training package was designed to support people in the provision, adjustment and assembly of the WFK wheelchair for children with special needs.

Wheelchair assessment is a vital process in determining the most appropriate mobility support for a child living with physical impairments. This process prioritises the child’s comfort, functionality, and health outcomes. An accurate and comprehensive wheelchair assessment ensures that the device provided contributes to postural support, functional independence, and prevention of secondary complications.

The training involved 13 trainees from various parts of the country who are directly involved in supporting children with special needs. There was also representation from Mama Respond personnel, including both staff and outreach workers. Additionally, a select number of children with special needs were present to assist in the practical wheelchair assembly sessions, as proper assembly must be tailored to the user's individual posture. A total of ten children had their wheelchairs successfully fitted.

The biggest lesson learnt? A wheelchair isn’t just a mobility device. It's a therapy tool.

This learning has changed the way our team thinks, their promotion of wheelchairs to community members and the outcomes of the assessments.

We're so grateful to have partnered with WFK and the local hospital in Kitengela. Now we know these wheelchairs will be fitted to perfection.

Thanks for your continued support.
