Send a Child to High School in Jamaica

CEF Scholars continue to excel!

As the Caribbean Education Foundation (CEF) start a new school year and our nonprofit seeks to ensure that all current scholars are able to continue their high school education for 2012-2013 school year, we thought you should know how they fared last year.

CEF received all the completed Grade Reports for our 12 students on Paul Bogle Scholarship.  We are excited to announce that all CEF Scholars did exceptionally well in high school!  Specifically 10 out of 12 remain "A" students:  Trevisa, Ashauni, Savena, Janneil, Curtis, Janet, Sarah, Tamia, Coya and Garth.  A number of students have perfect attendance records.  Two of the students are Number One in their class:  Trevisa is Number One for all students in Grade 8 at Morant Bay High School.  Ashauni is Number One in Grade 7 at Wolmer's High for Boys.

New Applicants:

Each year as school approaches and the CEF Scholarship Committee pours over tons of our Paul Bogle Scholarship applications, we are continually struck by how brilliant these children are!  We also get disheartened, because CEF's resources are severely limited and only a handful of the deserving will receive a scholarship. It is sad and heartbreaking...

Meet Shakar:  12 years old

In one of his essays, Shakar writes:

"I am qualified to receive a scholarship because I am hardworking, humble, dedicated and a determined individual.  After working so hard to pass my G.S.A.T. examination it finally pays off.  I am excited about going to the school of my choice, as I am closer in my career path to become a Civil Engineer.

I am qualified for this scholarship because of the hardship faced by my mother sending me to school with an absentee father, at times I only have fare to go and my teacher would assist me with lunch and fare to come home.  Sometimes I would save the little much my mother gave me so I would not be absent from school too much.  When the stresses of life reaches her she would sometimes borrow back the money I saved in order to meet other financial needs.  Most times I walked part way to school as I don't have the bus fare to take two buses so I walked and meet the bus that takes me near my school.  Sometimes I am tired but I know my mother has it hard so I just go to school and do my best.

I live in the Waltham Park area where my community is plagued by thieves, drugs and the 'barking of guns'.  When I looked on the young people in my community on the streets, not going to school, it makes me so depressed, but this scholarship will motivate me not to be one of them but to always listen to my mother's words that the only way out of poverty is through education.  I know that with your help I will make Caribbean Education Foundation, my mother, my teachers, my family and my community proud."

Shakar applied for scholarship last year, and would have received one, but CEF did not have sufficient funds.  He has resubmitted his application.  We are hoping to renew Scholarships for 12 children to attend high school. But with your donation, CEF will be able to assist few more additional children, like Shakar, to gain meaningful access quality education!   There are a number of ways in which you can help CEF to meet our goals:
