Since November, our team at Baylor-Uganda has been working hard to ensure that Sanyuka Camp is a reality for 80 more youths this year.
The most exciting news is that many of the logistics have been confirmed! Sanyuka Camp will be held once again at a local school in two sessions: 11-15 May and 18-22 May.
The Coordinator of Adolescent HIV Prevention, Cissy, has been communicating with our partner Serious Fun to ensure that our camp has all of the policies and procedures necessary to be successful and sustainable. We will have new manuals on program, staff training, medical, and activities. Amongst the many policies being developed are those for risk assessment, staff recruitment and hiring, camper recruitment, child protection, HIV at work, transportation, swimming pool, and emergency procedures.
All 80 campers have been recruited and we are currently undergoing a camper assessment to ensure they fit the inclusion criteria, including a medical examination, psychosocial assessment, and a conversation with caregivers to get consent from them and the child. Additionally, the medical team personnel have been identified and Cissy is working to recruit the other adult staff, such as group leaders, activity leaders, and the team leaders/trainers.
On the fundraising front, we submitted a proposal to the Baylor International Pediatric AIDS Initiative to fund a portion of the Sanyuka Camp budget and are awaiting feedback but are confident that they will be able to provide some support.
We would like to extend a sincere thank you to our current donors, Robert Mukasa, Ellen Heleen, and Anonymous, for your generous gifts (amounting to $165 USD!) to make an important experience in the lives of our HIV-infected youth a reality!
