Expanding Support for Young Learners' Education

By HBI | Operations Team

School Supplies & Lunch Box for Dampalit Kids
School Supplies & Lunch Box for Dampalit Kids

From July to November 2024, Haligi ng Bata, Inc. (HBI) has continued its commitment to improving the educational experience for young learners in La Union, Navotas, and Payatas, Quezon City. Over this period, HBI reached 300 children across daycare, kindergarten, and Grade 1, providing them with essential school supplies—such as notebooks, pad papers, pencils, and plastic envelopes—to ensure that each child has the necessary resources to engage fully in their studies.

In Navotas, where educational resources are particularly limited, the Tanza 1 and Tanza 2 Daycare Centers, as well as the kindergarten and Grade 1 classes at Dampalit Integrated School, received additional support. Here, 250 children were given lunch box sets to carry nutritious meals to school each day, supporting both their physical health and their ability to concentrate in class. In these same centers, HBI also delivered new classroom instructional materials, including flash cards, storybooks, and workbooks, which are vital tools in early education, helping young learners develop foundational literacy and cognitive skills.

Beyond instructional resources, HBI recognized the need to improve classroom environments in these facilities. Four classrooms across Tanza 1, Tanza 2, and Dampalit Integrated School were equipped with new electric fans to ensure better ventilation and comfort, enhancing students' ability to focus and participate in daily lessons.

Transforming the Project's Impact Through GlobalGiving Donor Support

The generous contributions from GlobalGiving donors like you have transformed what began as a simple daycare improvement project in La Union into a broader school improvement initiative with a far-reaching impact. Initially focused on enhancing resources for daycare centers, the project has now expanded to include a wider scope of public educational facilities, reaching children in kindergarten and early primary levels (Grade 1 to Grade 3). This evolution means that more young learners, including those in small, under-resourced daycare centers and primary school settings, are now able to access improved educational resources, creating a ripple effect that strengthens the foundation of early childhood education across these communities.

Through this support, HBI has been able to provide not only the basics for learning but also resources that foster an engaging and supportive educational environment. This transformation underscores the importance of holistic, community-focused improvements that extend beyond single facilities, making a lasting impact on the educational pathways of young learners in multiple areas.

Future Plans

Looking ahead, HBI aims to extend its reach to another community in need: Payatas C Elementary School in Quezon City. Payatas is one of the most densely populated and underserved areas in Metro Manila, where many families earn a living through labor-intensive jobs at the nearby dumpsite and junk shops. These challenging conditions often mean that families struggle to provide adequate educational resources and support for their children, who face barriers to consistent and effective learning.

By focusing on the kindergarten and Grade 1 learners at Payatas C Elementary School, HBI plans to provide crucial educational materials and classroom support to help these young students build a strong early foundation. With improved access to learning tools and resources, children in Payatas will have a better opportunity to thrive in school, setting them on a path to academic success and personal growth.

Additionally, HBI is preparing to implement a home-based tutorial program. This initiative will offer young learners opportunities to practice reading, writing, and arithmetic during school breaks, helping to bridge learning gaps and ensure students are well-prepared for each school year.

With these future plans in place, HBI anticipates that, by next year, approximately 520 children—from daycare to Grade 1 students—will benefit from the program’s comprehensive educational support activities.

Acknowledgments

Our heartfelt gratitude goes to you, our GlobalGiving donors, whose generosity drives these initiatives forward. Your support has enabled HBI to offer essential learning tools and create safer, more welcoming spaces where children can thrive. Thanks to your commitment, these young learners are gaining the skills and resources they need to build a brighter future, not only for themselves but for their entire community.
