100 Children Get Laptops for Online Education during Covid-19

Laptop Distribution to Underprivileged Girls

With the Covid-19 pandemic striking the World in alarming proportions, millions of people in India too became jobless overnight due to Nationwide lockdown. With social distancing affecting normal life, educational activities also came to a grinding halt.

The economically weaker sections of society have like always been the worst hit. With education shifting to online classes, Digital learning is the need of the hour to acquire knowledge and hold the key to a successful career.

However, it is proving very difficult for the poor students due for board exams to cope with the pressures owing to computers being out of reach for them. It is really a sorry state of affairs that in spite of being brilliant and hardworking, they are forced to lag behind in studies due to unavailability of devices to access education. Children from affluent families easily possess smartphones while it is an unimaginable luxury for low income background children. Understanding complex concepts has been next to impossible for them.

In this scenario, their hopes for a better tomorrow are instead threatened with a dark future looming large over their already bleak situation. It is alarming to see more and more incidents of suicide by young students from humble background succumbing to a losing battle of hopelessness.

We took the initiative to distribute refurbished laptops and new internet dongles to around 40 such families. There are 2 or 3 school going students in each family. It is heartening to know that with the laptops, about 100 children are now enabled to regularly attend their online classes.

Education is the right of every child irrespective of which strata of society they belong to. They are our precious future and urgently need our help and support to guide and lead them to their deserving destination.

IMPACT: Teachers have informed us that their students have gained immensely and made considerable progress by also taking internal exams successfully.

Encouraged by the positive response of the donors and the beneficiaries alike, Prajna Foundation is launching a Laptop Bank Project for the underprivileged. All are invited to support and participate.

Covid-19 Emergency Relief to Girls and Parents

Feed Every Single Child

As Covid19 strikes India and millions of people became jobless overnight due to Nationwide Lockdown, all educational activities also came to a grinding halt. Responding to the urgency, Prajna Foundation turned its attention to saving the most vulnerable section of the society. The focus shifted to immediate need of providing Covid-19 emergency relief.

Among an inhabitation of around 5000 people, lack of proper sanitisation in slums and cramped living conditions made them a hotspot for a full blown outbreak of Covid 19. Following the advisory of WHO, Prajna Foundation educated the slum dwellers about the guidelines and safe practices to prevent community transmission like importance of social distancing and maintaining cleanliness and personal hygiene.

The foundation distributed safety medical kits containing masks, soaps and sanitizers in the slums nearby. As of 31^st May 2020, 4000 Masks have been distributed and another 8,000 masks are also under process at our Skill Training Centre for the young girls.

Since the daily wage earners had lost their jobs and with no means of livelihood, day to day meals became scarce for multitude of families. Children and lactating mothers were left hungry and urgently needed all the support from every possible end.

The foundation launched 'Feed The Hungry’ initiative' and donned the mantle of Corona warriors to bring much needed relief. We started serving 1000 cooked meals every day in New Delhi’s Kalkaji slums to underprivileged children and their parents. Later on Dry Rations were given to those who had facilities for cooking their own food. Many did not have any kitchen. By the end of May, close to 150,000 meals have been provided.

IMPACT:

While millions of workers fled to their home towns and hundreds of them perished on their way due to starvation, dehydrations and road accidents, not a single person at Kalkaji slum felt the need to leave the place. The foundation successfully managed to mitigate their distress level due to Covid-19.

Bridging Digital Literacy Divide

Many of us may not realize the growing Digital Literacy divide in the developing countries like India and the need to bridge the gap.

Always on, always available, always enabled—this is the world of Generation C (“connected”) who will have grown up in a primarily digital world by 2020, according to a recent report by PwC. Computers, internet, mobile phones, texting, social networking are an integral part of their world. Their familiarity with technology and reliance on mobile communications will transform the way this generation works, entertains, collaborates, consumes and creates.

To prepare for the wave of digital transformation, building digital skills is as essential as creating digital infrastructure, starting with a progressive focus on digital literacy and general literacy. Those who lack either will find themselves sidelined.

In line with United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG4), Prajna Foundation has successfully implemented a pilot project on Digital Literacy program using ICT and modern software in Government Schools. The target beneficiaries are 450 underprivileged children who do not have any access to ICT otherwise. Besides teaching Computer, English, Mathematics and other Science subjects, they are also being taught moral education and ethical values. This model can be replicated in all 2600 government schools of Delhi NCR.

Prajna Foundation takes pride in transforming the lives of hundreds of children living in the urban slums with focus on the Girls. But the task is far from over. There are still over 21,000 girls in Delhi who have no access to education. Another 56,000 drop out every year due to lack of financial support.
