Pastoralist community rely on livestock and poverty in these communities manifests itself in form of hunger, lack of access to education, adequate clean water, lack of access to medical facilities. Girl child in Garissa County face numerous barriers to accessing basic education. School fees, uniforms, books, and community attitude towards girls that education delays girls marriage are among the major obstacles to universal secondary education in Garissa County. PGI rescue girls and take them to school to acquire education and to overcome these barriers we offer subsidized uniforms and school fees to the less vulnerable girls, as our way of ensuring that girls get quality education.
After receiving funds this phase we managed to pay school fees and distribute uniforms to our beneficiaries. The project send 200 girls to school has benefited the marginalized and less vulnerable girls from different secondary schools in Garissa. To highlight our commitment in this phase, the project will benefit 100 girls in more than 12 schools in Garissa County. Out of the 100 girls 35 girls received uniforms and the rest this term school fees was cleared. Result indicate a strong positive impact have been realized, It has reduced absenteeism, It has boosted the girls enrollment in secondary schools and reduce child marriages, girl child labour, and enhanced their performance in learning by retaining them in schools without the interference of being chased from school due to lack of school fees and uniform.
During the distribution of uniforms and issuance of cheques to the schools, PGI Executive Director had spent some time with students in their respective schools, She was quoted, ‘When you invest in education, children will pay it forward. Equipped with knowledge and confidence, they will grow up to lead healthier, more productive lives’.
Halima and her colleagues dreams of becoming doctors. If their dreams are realized, so many lives will be saved in our region where maternal deaths are staggering for lack of medical care. We in PGI cannot let the girls’ dreams die. We do everything to ensure their dreams are realized.
