As the year 2016 starts, we looked back with gratitude as we counted the many direct and indirect impact of the project to our beneficiaries. Every end of the year we do celebrate the graduation of girls from primary schools and excelled to join high school in our area, some have performed with great result while other have achieved average but most of these girls come from less fortunate background of families. About 6 in 10 girls completing primary schools in Garissa County achieve the required marks to join secondary schools but due to inadequate fees, learning resources and poverty they cannot transit to high school. Our project aims to bridge educational gaps for vulnerable high school girls in Garissa County. It enhance transition of girls from primary level to the high school where most of this girls end up dropping out of school.
After receiving funds from GlobalGiving for this quarter, we managed to provide the school fees, books, uniforms and sanitary towels to girls from Garissa County. The project Send 200 Somali girls to schools has benefited the most marginalized and vulnerable girls from different secondary schools in Garissa. So far the project has benefited 65 girls in more than 10 schools in Garissa County. It has boosted the girls enrollment in secondary schools and reduce child marriages, girl child labour, and enhanced their performance in learning by retaining them in schools without the interference of being chased from school due to lack of school fees, uniform, books and sanitary towels.
We managed to interview our beneficiaries and this is what one of them had to say; "While we appreciate the initiative of this kitty, my dream is to be doctor and when i finish my school, i want my village to realize that Somali girls can make it i in life and lead a dignified life. I know that when some of them see us wearing this red uniform (pointing to her red uniform) think that these big girls need to be married and boys preferred to go to school. I want to shame those who believe that girls are there to be married. I want to work in our community to treat people in the community who are not able to go anywhere for treatment. I will show them that girls "Wako na power mob sana" ( Girls have a lot of power)," She says. A girl from a very poor family who could not even aford a meal at home leaving purchasing uniform, books and fees to be admitted in high school as per the time we resued Aisha she was working as a maid in town to help her raise her school fees, books and uniform for her to join her high school the next year.
She is not the only girl who see or feel that girls should be giving an opporunity to get educate and return to service the community in various ways. Thank you so much for your generous support of PGI, through your generious support families and girls are getting the care they need to access education. Please accept our gratitude.
