During our ESSP climate outreach across over 40 schools in Ekiti State, Nigeria, we discovered that many students lacked basic learning materials such as exercise books and textbooks. At the same time, communities faced severe environmental degradation. Seed to School was created to address both challenges together by helping students grow seedlings that support both their education and environmental sustainability. The pilot phase has already launched at Ifaki Grammar School, Ifaki-Ekiti State
Across underserved communities in Ekiti State, many students attend school without basic learning materials such as exercise books, textbooks, and writing supplies. At the same time, communities continue to face environmental challenges including declining tree cover, soil degradation. Two challenges exist side by side: limited access to educational material and declining environmental resilience. Most interventions treat these as separate issues. This initiative seeks to address both at a time.
The initiative empowers students aged 11-18 to raise seedlings through a 12-week practical learning program. Students receive seeds, soil, planting nylons, and basic training on seedling cultivation and environmental sustainability. Some seedlings are planted within school premises, while others are sold through verified buyers. Proceeds are used to provide educational materials for participating students while helping schools create a greener learning environment.
The initiative is designed to be self-sustaining. After each cycle, students pass on the knowledge, skills, and experience to other students. Each participant leaves with educational materials they helped earn themselves and practical environmental skills that can support future opportunities. Schools also develop small seedling nurseries and environmental learning spaces that encourage sustainability as part of everyday school life, while communities benefit from greener & healthier environment
