Mae La Camp on the Thai-Myanmar border shelters 36,000 refugees. After international aid was suddenly cut in January 2025, the number of medical staff dropped from 400 to 236, and only 2 doctors remain. Tha Song Yang Hospital now oversees the camp but cannot fund a dedicated doctor. We will hire one general practitioner to serve Mae La Camp, securing 6 months of salary and transport. Your support keeps 36,000 people connected to quality healthcare.
Mae La Refugee Camp on the Thai-Myanmar border shelters 36,000 displaced people, mostly Karen who fled conflict in Myanmar. In January 2025, the sudden suspension of international aid forced major NGOs to withdraw. Medical staff were cut from 400 to 236, and only 2 doctors now serve the entire camp. Mental health staff dropped from 21 to 5, and 6 suicides were recorded in early 2026 alone. Tuberculosis, maternal health, and seasonal outbreaks go unmet. Lives are at risk.
This project will hire one dedicated general practitioner to work in Mae La Refugee Camp, in partnership with Tha Song Yang Hospital. We will fund the doctor's salary and daily transport for an initial 6 months, with a goal of extending to 12 months. The doctor will provide daily care for around 200 outpatients and 50 inpatients, manage tuberculosis, HIV, and maternal health cases, and respond to seasonal outbreaks-restoring a stable medical bridge for 36,000 refugees.
Beyond immediate relief, this project builds a sustainable healthcare foundation at the Thai-Myanmar border. A dedicated doctor enables early detection of infectious diseases, continuous maternal and child care, and stronger disease prevention systems. It also relieves pressure on Tha Song Yang Hospital and creates a replicable model for hiring more doctors in the future-ensuring that 36,000 refugees and surrounding communities retain reliable access to healthcare for years to come.
