A Fearless Trio and a Shared Dream

By Sher Betz | Co-founder Les Amis de Hampate Ba

For many underprivileged girls in Niger, education is more than a pathway to opportunity — it is a lifeline. It can mean the difference between independence and early marriage, between poverty and possibility, between a childhood cut short and a future full of ambition. For years, les Amis de Hampaté Bâ has been committed to supporting girls facing these difficult circumstances. Through scholarships, meals, learning materials, and ongoing mentorship, the association works tirelessly to remove obstacles that prevent girls from receiving a quality education.

Thanks to the generosity of donors, the organization recently extended vital support to three extraordinary students: Hama, Haffisa, and Leyla. Their stories highlight the strength, resilience, and promise of young women who simply needed the chance to learn and thrive.

A Dream Interrupted

In 2023, at only 15 years old, Hama and Haffisa successfully passed the BEPC (Brevet), a major educational milestone marking the completion of middle school. Both girls had high hopes of continuing to high school, with the shared goal of earning their Scientific Baccalaureate diploma.

But despite their impressive academic performance, their dreams were suddenly at risk. Their parents, unable to afford tuition fees, books, and daily meals, had no choice but to tell their daughters that they could not continue their studies. In their community, the most likely solution was one that has ended the educational journey of so many girls before them: early marriage.

For Hama and Haffisa, the possibility of giving up their education was devastating. They had worked hard, achieved remarkable results, and dreamed of a brighter future. Yet financial hardship stood in the way.

A Lifeline Arrives

When HB les Amis de Hampaté Bâ learned of the situation, the association immediately began investigating. Representatives met with the families, visited their homes, and saw firsthand the extremely difficult living conditions. The parents were doing their best to support their children, but lacked the resources necessary to keep them in school.

Recognizing both the gravity of the situation and the incredible academic potential of the girls, the association made a decision that would change two lives forever. Hama and Haffisa were granted full scholarships, along with support to cover school meals and fees, enabling them to continue their education at Hampaté Bâ Secondary School.

The results were astonishing. Despite the difficulty of their scientific major — a field mostly dominated by boys — the girls excelled. Their teachers quickly noticed their dedication and talent.

Over the past two years, Hama and Haffisa earned brilliant grades, praise from professors, and the admiration of their classmates. They completed 10th and 11th grade at the top of their class with outstanding averages: 18 out of 20 for one, and 15 out of 20 for the other. Their achievements not only confirmed their academic strength, but also their determination to overcome adversity.

Now entering their final year of high school — “Terminale,” the equivalent of 12th grade — both girls are preparing for the next big challenge: the Scientific Baccalaureate exam. If successful, they plan to pursue medical studies, a dream that reflects their drive to help others and serve their community. They know the road ahead is demanding, but they are fearless, motivated, and ready.

A New Hope: Leyla’s Story

This inspiring journey soon extended to another student: Leyla, a friend and classmate of the two girls. Already enrolled at Hampaté Bâ High School, Leyla suddenly found herself facing circumstances similar to those of Hama and Haffisa. Her father lost his job over the summer break, leaving the family unable to cover tuition.

Afraid of losing her education, Leyla reached out. The association again took action, meeting with her family, reviewing their situation, and assessing her academic record. They found a household facing severe financial hardship, but also a student whose grades were strong and whose motivation matched that of her friends.

The decision was clear. Thanks to donor contributions, Leyla received the same opportunity: financial support to continue her studies through her final year of high school.

A Fearless Trio and a Shared Dream

Today, Hama, Haffisa, and Leyla stand together as a powerful symbol of hope. Their courage, perseverance, and academic excellence demonstrate what young people can achieve when provided with the chance to learn. Each of them is working toward a future in the medical field, with the shared vision of improving women’s health in Niger.

They know that earning the Scientific Baccalaureate is only the beginning. Medical studies require many additional years of dedication and effort. But these three students are ready and willing to keep moving forward — and they are deeply grateful for the support that has made this possible.

Their stories are proof of how educational assistance can ripple outward, not only transforming individual lives, but strengthening families and communities. By helping these girls pursue their dream careers, donors are also helping to build a future in which more women have access to the healthcare and support they need.

The Journey Continues

The progress of these three girls is a testament to what can be achieved when compassion meets opportunity. Through the continued generosity of donors, les Amis de Hampaté Bâ hopes to ensure that Hama, Haffisa, and Leyla can complete their final year of high school and continue into higher education.

The road is long — but the potential is limitless. With every lesson learned, every exam passed, and every milestone reached, these students move one step closer to shaping a stronger, healthier future for women across Niger.

Their success is not just theirs alone. It belongs to everyone who believes in equality, in education, and in the power of young women to change the world.
