Feeding Our Future: Second Harvest's Summer Lunch Program

By Shane DeMerchant | Director, Individual & Foundation Giving

Bridging the Hunger Gap from June to September

Feeding Our Future is Canada's largest summer lunch program and has tackled summer hunger since 2000. It bridges the gap for families experiencing food insecurity during the summer months, when school food programs are unavailable. Feeding our Future provides critical nutrition for kids and allows agencies offering free day camps to divert their limited food budgets to other vital areas of their community programs and services.

By providing nutritious lunch packs, Second Harvest ensures that children attending summer camps receive the essential nutrients they need to stay healthy and active. Feeding our Future allows campers to participate fully in camp activities – it lets kids be kids. Since it’s inception, the program has delivered over 837,000 to thousands of children in Toronto.

For Feeding Our Future, maximizing impact also means considering diversity and accessibility. To provide a balanced and inclusive meal, we ensure that kids coming from diverse cultural and religious backgrounds have equal access to lunch options. Staff and volunteer teams prepare lunches that offer meat, vegetarian, and halal sandwich selections and include healthy snacks such as oranges, apples, and baby carrots.

Once assembled by our volunteer teams, lunches are delivered by a Second Harvest driver to our camp partners five days a week.

 Feeding our Future in 2025

This summer the Feeding Our Future program delivered 37,540 healthy lunches, providing critical nourishment to 3,342 youths at more than 22 summer camps. One of those camps is the Lady Ballers Centre in Toronto, a welcoming space where girls are encouraged to reach their full potential. Their programs seek to remove gender, racial and economic barriers and foster social change through accessibility, inclusivity and advocacy.

“The kids come to camp more frequently,” shared Ashley Mofa, program manager at the Lady Ballers Centre, “because they have access to food.” Ashley shared that since the pandemic, more families have been facing financial challenges, making transportation and access to healthy food even harder.

“The girls get to eat breakfast, have something in the morning, and they are fed throughout the day,” she explained.

“Food is what gets them through the door, and once inside, campers find a safe space to “grow, learn and discover a real sense of self.”

Thank You

On behalf of Second Harvest and Toronto’s families facing food insecurity thank you for supporting our work and for making Feeding Our Future possible.

Food nourishes and offers hope and together we’re Toronto’s children and youth the security they need to grow and thrive.
