Screen 1000 Nepali Women for Important Cancers

Thank you again to all our very generous supporters. We have been so grateful to receive your donations to be able to continue to screen women in Nepal for breast and cervical cancer. In April this year we were able to screen a further 43 women bringing our overall total to 1055 women. 

The joint program was organised by Satya Sai Hospital in conjunction with the Nepal Network for Cancer Treatment and Research (NNCTR) and was very fruitful in providing an important service to the community.

Almost 100 patients benefited from a general gynaecological and reproductive health check-up and 43 women received cervical cancer screening at this camp.

Results from the screening camp found that 29 women screened had a cervical infection, these women were provided with free medication to treat the infection and 3 women were found to have a prolapsed uterus and were referred to the hospital for further treatment. All other women had a normal result and no pre-cervical cancer abnormalities were found.

69 women were screened in Kathmandu and 148 in Bhaktapur

Firstly I would like to say a huge thank you to all our supporters. We have been able to add to your generous donations some funding from local community supports to screen almost an additional 200 women in Nepal for breast and cervical cancer bringing our overall total to 1012.

We have been fortunate to run two screening camps this time around. The first was in Kathmandu on March 30 2012 at the Balanbu Health Post. Our team screened 69 women for cervical abnormalities.  Fortunately there was only one woman who was found to have a cervical infection and was provided medication to treat this. All the other women had normal results.

The second screening camp was held on 31 March 2012 in Bhaktapur at the Aadarsha Secondary School, Thaimi ward 13. At this camp our team conducted both cervical and breast cancer screening.

We screened 148 women for cervical cancer and found 59 women with an infected cervix (all were provided medication for treatment), 4 women tested positive for per-cervical cancerous lesions and 11 women were found to have a prolapsed uterus. The other 74 women screened all had normal results. We also screened 174 women for breast cancer and found 17 women to have breast abnormalities. These women were referred to the TU teaching Hospital, Kathmandu.
