80% of New Zealand Primary/Elementary School students fail science at age 12. Help us help school teachers to deliver better science lessons through our community-based science resource library. We distribute and maintain over 1,000 hands-on science resource kits that cater for a class of 5-12 yr old students. Every fortnight over 40,000 students use these kits. They love the exciting experiments. We are looking for support to reach more students in remote and underserved communities.
In New Zealand, most primary/elementary schools lack the resources to teach science. Many teachers also lack the confidence to teach this subject well. This has resulted in 80% of 12 year-olds failing science. International research shows that by the time kids turn 10 they have made up their minds about their future career path. So exposure to subjects like science needs to start well before then, i.e. at primary/elementary school. The government does not directly fund subject resources.
House of Science deliver science resource kits through a shared community library model. Each kit contains 5-8 different experiments, catering for 5-12yr olds. Kits are distributed and maintained by staff and volunteers all over the country on a fortnightly basis. Teachers and students alike love the hands-on nature and demand is huge. We are keen to expand our reach into more rural communities so are looking for help with distribution costs.
We are looking to expand the program to more remote and rural locations, and reach a further 2,000 students. Data shows our science resources result in improved student behavior and school attendance. We also know that young people who engage in STEM learning today are going to be at a huge advantage in the future. They will have better job opportunities. This, in turn, will contribute to more wealth and prosperity for themselves and their communities.
