The situation in Haiti

Dear supporter,

as you have probably already heard, Haiti unfortunately suffered several severe blows of fate this summer. Following the politically motivated assassination of the president, a magnitude 7.2 earthquake in August 2021 left severe damage - nearly 2,000 people were killed, 9,900 people are injured, and about 60,000 homes were destroyed. In addition, the quake triggered a landslide that cost more people their homes.

Thanks to your donations, the two schools were able to be built earthquake-proof, and we are happy to announce that our two elementary schools, St. Emma and St. Nicholas, survived the earthquake undamaged. In these times of crisis, we supported the urgently needed medical care. We worked hard on also organizing non-medical assistance, such as distributing building materials for temporary shelters. At the moment the schools are closed, but we hope that lessons will continue soon. Thanks to your active support, we are able to keep the school running, pay salaries for teachers and cover the school's operating costs.

In addition to these pictures and reports, which touch us deeply and motivate us to continue working with the people in Haiti, there was also a great reason for joy: Pen Paper Peace e.V. turned 10 years old and we put on a great online festival. There were concerts, workshops and networking. Among other things, we gave a stage to the winners of the international writing competition that we launched together with the Eckenroth Foundation. The winners, aged 10 to 14, presented their texts on the topic of "borders" and "friendship" and moved us all deeply. The event was a great success and we were able to draw attention to our projects. Update from Haiti + International Writing Contest

Hello!

We at PEN PAPER PEACE e.V. have been full of activities and ideas in the first half of the year! A lot has happened in our Schools for Haiti project:

School activity at St. Emma and St. Nicolas

We are proud and happy to inform you that our two elementary schools St. Emma and St. Nicolas are still open for about 600 students!

Since August 2020, the schools have been running without interruption under a strict hygiene concept. Thanks to your donations, the students are able to experience a bit of everyday life and stability in times of crisis and to catch up on the material they have missed during the lockdown. With your active support, the school is kept running, teachers' salaries are paid and the school's operational costs are covered.

We need your continued support to ensure the future existence of the schools. Thank you for your donation!

The international writing competition goes into a new round

Together with the Eckenroth Foundation, we are again inviting children and young people to take part in our international writing competition in 2021. With our topics, we want to inspire young people to look beyond their "borders". Children and young people from Germany, Italy, Haiti, Honduras and Namibia can take part. Last year, a German-Haitian writing competition was already held in cooperation with the Eckenroth Foundation under the theme "My dream for the future". Unfortunately, due to Corona, the competition in Haiti had to be cancelled. In Germany, however, it was a huge success. Now we are looking forward to all the texts that students will write this year. Basic medical care for Haitian school children

Hello!

In Haiti, the situation remains tense due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Even though the country has so far been spared a dramatic second wave of infections such as that experienced in Europe, the future remains uncertain. Especially since the prevention measures that have been proven, such as regular hand washing and physical distance, are not possible in the poor neighborhoods of Port-au-Prince.

Luckily, both of our elementary schools remain open under a strict hygiene policy and provide a safe place for the 600 students to learn.

We were also very glad that our project for the basic medical care project for the children could continue at the end of last year. Two medically trained teams examined the students and informed the parents about the children's health, possible treatments and vaccinations.

Basic medical care, information and the detection of possible illnesses become even more important in the current pandemic situation. Without the check-up, previous illnesses of the children would probably have remained undetected for a long time, and threaten the health of the students. That shows how important regular health check-ups are. Projects like this are therefore very important to us, as many of the children would otherwise be largely denied access to basic medical care.

Global citizenship education in Germany

Part of our work is dedicated to global citizenship education. We are constantly working on our range of educational materials. As part of this, we run a digital learning platform where students and teachers have free access to our digital learning materials. So far, we offer 5 self-learning modules on Haiti's history and present, designed for high school students.

In addition, our "Toolbox for Global Citizens" provides young people with the tools they need for their own social involvement - from brainstorming through planning all the way to their own project!

Now we are also working on elementary school-appropriate digital learning expeditions on in Honduras and Haiti, so stay tuned! You can find our digital learning platform here.
