Debate at Tunamkumbuka
Debate at Tunamkumbuka

In January and February we were busy training teachers in Kagera, western Tanzania on how best use technology in their teaching.  This included using downloaded science and maths resources that we took out with us on their laptops, and on micro SD cards on their smartphones.

We also shared many useful educational websites with them which have useful resources including videos and electronic textbooks.  For schools like these, with very few resources, and generally very traditional methods of teaching such resources can make a huge difference.

One of the big challenges is that primary education is in Swahili and secondary in English.  So when students start at secondary school they really struggle to understand the curriculum.  Therefore we have been working with 4 schools on a pre-form 1 course.  This meant that students could start learning English ready for secondary school as soon as they finished primary school, rather than having nothing to do in this 3 month gap.  We are pleased to say this has made a huge difference to their ability to access the curriculum and confidence in speaking English and we hope to repeat it next year, funds allowing.

Another huge problem is that girls face additional challenges in schools.  There are generally few female teachers, girls have additional chores at home and often lack confidence about speaking in class.  Therefore we have supported schools to start girls' clubs which offer a safe environment where girls can talk about issues of concern, support each other, and access relevant information and inspiring case studies.  Initial reports are showing that these are having very positive outcomes.

Thanks again for your generosity in supporting this project.
