Christmas and an anniversary
By Emily Burns | Treasurer

We are continuing our fundraising efforts to build and supply libraries for primary-school children. While we are doing that, we help children in as many other ways as we can. On December 25th, we joined with the nonprofit Helping Hand Cambodia to make a Christmas Miracle: a Christmas party for more than 40 children who live in slums in Phnom Penh. We played games and decorated cupcakes, and every child received gifts. Many of these children sell snacks on the streets every day to help support their families. This event gave them a chance to just be kids, have fun, and enjoy the holiday.
On January 18, we celebrated our fourth anniversary. We celebrated the contributions of our trainees, volunteers, and student members, and the graduation of our latest group of trainees from the Our Responsibility Initiative program. Our orgainzation continues to grow.

Getting ready for Giving Tuesday

Our board members in the U.S. met on Zoom in mid-October and planned a fundraiser for Giving Tuesday (November 29). We will meet with the Cambodian team on Zoom at the end of October or the start of November to divide up responsibilities and start our effort. Our strategy is to produce emails and social media postings throughout November that describe our projects and accomplishments since our founding in 2019. These accomplishments include the establishment of student chapters at several universities in Cambodia; training programs in leadership and social entrepreneurship; deliveries of school supplies to children in rural villages; partnerships with local and national organizations in Cambodia; tree plantings; and the founding of small businesses by graduates of our training programs. We can demonstrate that we do a lot with the funds we receive, mainly because of the work of our volunteers and student chapters.

Working as a team in two countries

This has been a productive time. We are reorganizing and growing our organization and setting up new ways for our Cambodian and American members to communicate. Membership has grown to more than 100 people in Cambodia. Core members in Cambodia have taken on roles in three departments: Administration, Media, and Project Management. The Project Management department includes our new Fundraising Manager, Ear Eamkim.
We now have a dedicated library fundraising group and a grant writing group. Members of these departments and groups can communicate with the board members in the US with Telegram chats and in Zoom meetings. The 11-hour time difference can make it tricky to meet in real time, but we are getting into a routine of talking to each other.
Our treasurer is working with the grant writing group to write funding proposals for our library and for other fundraising efforts.
