Malnutrition/starvation are very commonplace here. Most children have never known what a full and nutritious meal looks like. The feeding program is essential to their mental/physical health/growth. We are working to raise funds for four different feeding programs in Sierra Leone, West Africa.
20% of Sierra Leone children will die before their 5th birthday. Malnutrition and starvation are heavy contributors to this woeful statistic. And there are still untold numbers of kids who don't ever see a nutritious meal. Mal-Nourishment/Starvation also contributes to terribly impaired learning capabilities. This makes the four school feeding programs BTA is funding/wants to fund absolutely critical to the future of the country
Because of the school feeding program, the children who are participating in the program come to school every day and on time; they're more active in class; they're doing better academically; they're stronger and more energetic; and they are moving on to higher grade levels!! We are very proud!
Long term impact: healthier children who will be educated and succeed because they've been nourished. A story: I came to know a school with a BTA feeding program in 2005 when I was a drop-out selling kerosene in the streets. As a boy with an empty stomach, I used to find it difficult to go & be in school with a concentrated mind. Then I received food through BTA. As a result of this meal, I stayed in school healthy and active and am now the Principal for the same school I attended with BTA!
