About Ear Care Nepal

Ear Care Nepal’s School Ear Health Program aims to reduce preventable hearing loss among Nepalese
children through early detection, treatment, and community awareness. Hearing impairment remains a
significant concern, particularly among school-aged children, where many ear conditions can be prevented or
treated when identified early.

With continued support from our partners and donors, Ear Care Nepal works to ensure that children receive
timely ear care while strengthening the capacity of communities and schools to recognize ear and hearing
problems early. By combining direct services with local capacity building, we are working toward a future
where every child has the opportunity to hear, learn, and thrive.

Our Work:

School Ear Health Screenings & Surgeries

During April–June 2026, we continued our school ear health activities, reaching children through screening,
treatment, referral, and surgical care:

  • Conducted ear and hearing screenings for 3,948 children across 14 schools.
  • Facilitated 29 ear surgeries for children requiring advanced care.

School-based screening helps identify ear diseases and hearing problems early, allowing children who need
further intervention to be referred for specialized treatment.

Building Local Capacity: Training School Nurses

In April 2026, Ear Care Nepal conducted a dedicated, hands-on training program for a group of 9 school
nurses. This initiative is part of our ongoing School Ear Health Program, aimed at building local capacity and
ensuring early detection of ear and hearing problems among children.

In Nepal, many children suffer from preventable and treatable ear conditions that often go unnoticed until they begin to affect learning and communication. Schools are a critical point of contact, and trained school nurses can play a key role in identifying early signs of ear disease and facilitating timely care.

Recognizing this, Ear Care Nepal focuses not only on direct service delivery but also on empowering school-
based health personnel to act as an important first line of support against preventable hearing loss.

The training covered:

  • Basic ear anatomy and common ear diseases in children
  • Techniques for ear examination, hearing evaluation, and identification of warning signs
  • Safe ear care practices and infection prevention
  • Referral pathways for specialized treatment and surgery
  • Communication strategies for educating students and parents

The sessions combined theoretical learning with practical demonstrations, allowing participants to build
confidence in recognizing common ear and hearing concerns and supporting timely care.

Looking Ahead

Ear Care Nepal has trained 2,180 health workers to date. We plan to expand school nurse training programs
to more schools across the country, particularly in underserved regions. Strengthening local capacity will
remain central to our mission of reducing preventable hearing loss among Nepalese children.

                                        YOUR SUPPORT CREATES LASTING IMPACT

From screening thousands of children to strengthening the skills of school nurses, your support helps bring
timely ear care closer to the children and communities who need it most.

Together, we can help every child hear, learn, and thrive.
