In a time of hardship, crumbling businesses, hunger and racism, we are amazed at the generosity of people everywhere. Love to Langa would like to thank all for the kindness bestowed on others.
Building in the townships of South Africa is an amazing experience. Community involvement is tantamount to the success of the school. Everyone gets involved from donors to volunteers and most of all, the community.
In the midst of Covid-19, the school’s building plans are with council waiting for approval and Love to Langa is overseeing the training of teachers. The teachers have been working online with the college and will be resuming classes on July 4, 2020 under strict conditions.
Even during this time of uncertainty the residents are excited at the prospect of the first Montessori school in Langa.
Our seven kind and enthusiastic future teachers attended their first day of college at Montessori Centre South Africa on February 1, 2020. The excitement was contagious and the Langa community is so proud of the women furthering their education on behalf of the children they will be teaching when the Love to Langa Montessori School opens in 2021. It's been a life-long dream for many of them. We will be selecting the one best suited for administrative work to be trained as the school principal. The program is 18-months and they will graduate with a certificate in Montessori Education, in plenty of time for the opening of the school.
Langa Township is a hive of activity. International visitors walking down the streets connect with children, adults and even school groups coming to view and assist the community in any way.
The Love to Langa Board of Directors has registered and enrolled six women from the Langa community who are completing our Montessori Foundations program to further their studies at a South African Montessori college. There are two ladies who are desperate to join the college but unfortunately we could only afford the six ladies who will commence in February 2020 with their accredited studies.
Parents from the community have been requesting more information regarding the completion of the school as they would like to register their children already. The excitement is building to such an extent that we will be introducing Montessori workshops for parents at the end of January 2020 while the school plans are still in submission.
Although we likely will not break ground on our new Montessori School in Langa Township for another year, the Teacher Training Foundations program at Cornerstone Montessori is well underway!
The ladies from Langa Township are into their third month Montessori training at Cornerstone Montessori in Somerset West. To date, there has been no drop-outs or unnecessary absenteeism, only confident and enthusiastic students.
Our dedicated trainer, Helen Morgan, who owns Cornerstone, has her masters degree in Montessori education is proud of each and every student. The students are handing in assignments on time and are ready to volunteer and do observations at Montessori schools. The students have started a study group at the Langa Community Advice Forum run by Joy MacNab, who has generously allowed the students to study there.
Love to Langa Swimming Academy is going from strength to strength. The appointed swim school contractor operates daily at Philippi Children’s Centre.
Philippi Children’s Centre pupils swim on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday mornings. Private pupils from the community swim on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons, Saturdays and Sundays.
There are currently 60 private pupils and 37 privately sponsored students and the swim school contractor is currently breaking even. The swim coach receives ongoing assessment and training to ensure he is doing the best training possible. Generous donors through the current swim contractor donated swim suits for the children.
The current swim contractor’s contract is coming to an end in 2019. The Philippi Children’s Centre management committee will be interviewing several swim contractors, including the current contractor.
As this is a Love to Langa project, the board members are consistently monitoring and evaluating the project going forward.
