Southern Cross Academy is a small non-profit British Curriculum school in Vilankulo, Mozambique that prepares children to be global citizens. This project supports scholarships for two local children whose parents value quality international education, but who cannot afford the school's modest fees. Each scholarship makes a huge difference for a child and their family by making it possible to access an international education, putting them on a different path in life.
Mozambicans who aspire to be global citizens need strong English and critical thinking skills to open doors. The same goes for the children of Zimbabwean economic refugees living in Mozambique. The public school system does not meet these needs because the medium for instruction is Portuguese. While Southern Cross Academy offers the answer, most families cannot afford the school fees of under $200 because, for many, that represents a huge percentage of the overall family income.
By providing scholarships that cover 60% of school fees, this project makes international education accessible to selected recipients who are chosen based on income and potential. When a donor makes a commitment to take a child all the way through year six of primary school at Southern Cross Academy, they open up possibilities including the pursuit of further education outside of Mozambique and international career paths.
Southern Cross students and graduates are a diverse and exceptional group. By including lower income families in the Southern Cross community, this program contributes toward dismantling social inequities - through income and wellbeing at the individual level and through social cohesion and sustainability at the communal level.
