St. George's Society’s Scholarship Committee met in July to review applications for financial assistance from current final-year students at Lehman College (part of CUNY). Thanks to funds raised through GlobalGiving and at the English Ball, the Society's annual gala in April, the Committee awarded 26 scholarships totaling $93,000.
This year’s scholars come from a number of Commonwealth countries, including Bangladesh, Ghana, Jamaica and Nigeria and are majoring in a variety of degrees, such as Nursing, Accounting, Health Education and Sociology.
One example is Kashfia from Bangladesh, whose ambition is to become a cancer specialist. She said that the scholarship will allow her to focus on her studies and help “turn my dream of being a doctor into reality.” Alia from Jamaica has chosen a career as a math teacher as she is “passionate about education.” She is grateful for the scholarship that will allow her to take a leave of absence from her job and focus on her student teaching internship.
Since the program began in 2008, St. George's Society has awarded 224 scholarships totaling over $620,000 and in 2013 the Society became Lehman College’s largest benefactor. Next year, we plan to expand the program to include Hunter College, also in the CUNY system.
