In a recent Lehman College newsletter, President Dr. Ricardo Fernandez reported on 2014 highlights:

Scholarships continue to grow at Lehman College and impact the lives of our students. Last year the St. George’s Society generously awarded $106,000 in scholarship funds to 38 students. Since its inception in 2008, the St. George’s Society Scholarship Program has awarded $529,000 to nearly 200 students who hail from British and Commonwealth countries.”

This would not have been possible without the support of generous donors like you.

The Society's 2014 scholars, including Alia from Antigua, look forward to celebrating their commencement in May. Alia spent much of her younger life in the foster care system in the United States and having seen many others in care drop out of high school, she was determined to get a good education and become a contributing member of the community.

Using savings and student loans to support herself, Alia is currently a senior in the Social Work program at Lehman College with certification in Child Abuse and Maltreatment as well as Suicide Prevention. Alia is active in her local community and has participated in volunteer programs such as the Lehman College Childcare Center and The Bronx is Blooming. Alia has children of her own including a son with developmental delays. This has inspired her to pursue a career working with children with special needs and she is currently an intern at Spuyten Duyvil preschool for children with developmental delays. Alia is grateful for the support provided by St. George’s Society that has helped pay for her final year at Lehman College and when she graduates this year, she intends to go to graduate school to earn her master’s degree in Social Work.

St. George's Society's scholarship committee will be meeting in the summer to review new applications for financial aid for the coming academic year and we look forward to sharing their stories with you.

Thank you for your support!
