SGSNY receives $600,000 grant for scholarships

By Hastings Hill | Communications & Membership Manager

We celebrated the success of our 2020 grads.
We celebrated the success of our 2020 grads.

St. George’s Society of New York is delighted to report that we have been selected to receive a project grant of $600,000 to support our Scholarship Program.

This grant will enable the Society to fulfill our objective of expanding the program to City University of New York (CUNY) institutions across the city’s five boroughs. CUNY has a proven track record for some of the highest mobility rates among four-year public colleges and St. George’s Society is a proud supporter of its mission to provide a high-quality and accessible education regardless of background or means. We have identified the target university partners and begun the process of establishing awards for the 2020-21 academic year.

The overriding aim of the Scholarship Program is to provide a foundation for the future of disadvantaged students. As the current global health crisis continues and unemployment rises, the Scholarship Program is critical to ensuring the academic futures of students especially hard hit by this time of uncertainty. Many scholars are the primary breadwinners in their families, and before COVID-19 were already living paycheck to paycheck. Adding to that is the withering effect of the pandemic on the global economy, translating into massive layoffs and furloughs. Now, more than ever, scholars need St. Georges Society’s help to get through this emergency.

As the we enter the fall, we look forward to sharing more details on the expansion of the Scholarship Program and our incoming class of scholars.
