Scholarships for Intelligent but Needy Students

By Bonnie Mendes | Project Leader

My name is Cynthia. Within our home, learning is a family affair—my father, George, and my mother, Shakeela, have raised five of us to value education above all else. I am the eldest of five children, followed by three sisters and a brother, all of whom are students. My sisters are currently navigating First Year, Grade 9, and Grade 8, while my youngest brother is in Grade 3. Every day, watching their quiet determination and tireless work ethic inspires me to set the best example I can.

As a second-semester Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) student, my goal has always been to care for others. However, the path was not without its financial challenges. Receiving the scholarship from the Society for Human Development transformed my journey over the past six months. This support did far more than lighten the weight of my academic fees and daily expenses—it gave me the freedom to immerse myself entirely in my nursing studies without the constant shadow of worry.

I carry deep gratitude for the Society for Human Development and every individual whose generosity made this opportunity possible. Your belief in my potential has not only changed the trajectory of my education, but it has also kindled a flame of purpose within me to work even harder, complete my degree, and give back to the community that lifted me up.
