Thanks to your support, SBP's Hurricane Laura response and long-term recovery efforts continue to return vulnerable families to the safety and security of their homes - thank you! After completing its initial response work, including debris removal, mucking/gutting and mold remediation, SBP moved into its home rebuilding work for vulnerable survivors. With your commitment, SBP has rebuilt 79 homes in Southwest Louisiana to date.
SBP is working to ensure that families are more resilient and better equipped to handle future severe weather. In addition to receiving an IBHS FORTIFIED roof, which provides long-term protection from future storms, families are encouraged to apply for insurance, which is likely more affordable because of the quality roofs on their homes. Thanks to you, SBP has played an integral role in laying the groundwork for long-term recovery in Southwest Louisiana, and continues to lead rebuilding efforts across the region.
For SBP clients like Mr. Roy, home is everything. Roy, 86-years old, worked as a driller on oil rigs for most of his life. His home was destroyed when the 140 mph winds of Hurricane Laura tore a hole in his roof, causing water damage in most rooms. This August, one year after the storm, Roy moved back to the safety and security of his home. Roy cannot read or write, but his niece, Sharon, helped him apply for FEMA assistance and to seek help from SBP.
Like many in the aftermath of Hurricane Laura, Roy lost a lot. His home damage made it too unsafe for him to stay, so he moved in with family as he tried to figure out the FEMA process. His initial award from FEMA didn’t come near what was needed to cover his damage. Roy connected with SBP and we helped him appeal his initial FEMA award of $14,000, increasing his total award to $34,000. With your commitment to serving the most vulnerable Hurricane Laura survivors, SBP also rebuilt Roy’s home, replacing the damaged floors, windows, drywall and giving him a new, FORTIFIED roof to ensure that his home is safe and secure for years to come.
