Summary

The Tapir Mountain Nature Reserve protects 6,286 acres of pristine Belizean rainforest beneath the Maya Mountains, providing critical habitat for endangered species like Baird's tapir and jaguar while supplying clean water to 3,600+ people downstream. Belize Karst Habitat Conservation safeguards this vital ecosystem through ranger patrols that combat illegal logging, hunting, and poaching. Your support funds these rangers who risk their lives daily to preserve the watershed and biodiversity.

Challenge

Tapir Mountain Nature Reserve (TMNR) faces severe, immediate threats that endanger its pristine rainforest and the wildlife and communities that depend on it. The two highest-priority threats, illegal hunting and looting, are actively degrading the reserve. Without continuous surveillance and monitoring by the ranger team, these activities will irreversibly damage biodiversity, watershed stability, and the livelihoods of 3,600+ people in downstream communities like Teakettle and Ontario.

Solution

This project aims to fill the gaps in funding for the salary of a dedicated ranger team to implement the reserve's top-priority management strategies: 1. Patrols to deter hunting, logging, and looting. 2. Collaboration with the Belize Defense Force and the Forest Department for joint operations. 3. Maintain clear boundaries and signage to reduce encroachment. 4. Work with local communities to reduce reliance on illegal activities. Rangers are the frontline defense to safeguarding the TMNR.

Long-Term Impact

Your support will: Reduce illegal hunting by 25%+ within 1 year (increase patrols in high-risk zones). Protect archaeological sites from looting through targeted surveillance. Safeguard 1,000+ species, including critically endangered jaguars, tapirs, and migratory birds. Secure clean water for 3,600+ people by preventing watershed degradation. With your help, we can turn the tide against TMNR's most critical threats. Donate today - empower rangers and save this ecological treasure!
