Saving Mothers, Safeguarding Futures- Report

By Esther Lijoka-Adaba | Project Leader

The Saving Mothers, Safeguarding Futures: The Safe Birthing in Nigeria project was implemented to address the persistent challenge of maternal and neonatal mortality in underserved communities across Nigeria. The project focused on improving access to clean, safe, and dignified childbirth services for pregnant women, particularly in rural and low-income areas where health facilities are limited and preventable birth-related complications remain high.

The overall goal of the project was to reduce maternal and newborn deaths by promoting safe delivery practices and strengthening community-level maternal health support. Key objectives included the distribution of clean birthing kits, sensitization of pregnant women on safe delivery and antenatal care, and capacity strengthening of traditional birth attendants (TBAs) and community health workers on hygienic delivery practices.

Project activities commenced with community engagement meetings involving local leaders, health workers, and women groups to foster ownership and acceptance. A total of clean birthing kits containing essential items such as sterile gloves, soap, cord clamps, plastic delivery sheets, and clean blades were distributed to pregnant women identified through antenatal clinics and community outreach. Health education sessions were conducted to raise awareness on danger signs in pregnancy, the importance of skilled birth attendance, postnatal care, and timely referral to health facilities.

The project achieved significant outcomes. Pregnant women reported increased confidence and preparedness for delivery, while TBAs and community health workers demonstrated improved knowledge of infection prevention and safe delivery practices. The availability of clean birthing kits reduced the risk of infections during home deliveries and complemented facility-based care. Community acceptance of safe birthing practices improved, and linkages between households and nearby health facilities were strengthened.

Despite challenges such as limited transportation and late presentation of pregnant women, the project recorded notable progress in promoting safer childbirth. Lessons learned highlighted the importance of community involvement, continuous health education, and collaboration with local health systems.

In conclusion, the Saving Mothers, Safeguarding Futures project contributed meaningfully to improving maternal and newborn health outcomes in targeted communities. Sustaining and scaling up this intervention will further support Nigeria’s efforts to reduce maternal mortality and safeguard the future of mothers and children.
