Since our last update, Marion Island’s postponed winter relief voyage has successfully reactivated the research base, and the M83 overwintering team has settled in for the next eight months. For the first time, the MFM Project team travelling on the relief voyage was made up entirely of women: Dr Sue Tonin (MFM Project Assistant Manager), Dr Vonica Perold (MFM Field Assistant 2025/2026), along with Lola Singo and Santjie du Toit (MFM Field Assistants 2026/2027). Despite challenging weather and icy, snow-covered terrain, the team completed the necessary field work. Meanwhile, preparations for the April/May 2027 large-scale aerial baiting trial are progressing well, with a helicopter contractor appointed and logistical and research plans underway. This trial is in important step towards testing the equipment and procedures needed for the mouse eradication operation. The MFM Project team has also been raising awareness of the project, connecting with supporters at the South African Bird Fair and a book event at Sunset Books in Strand, where former Marion Island overwinterers shared their experiences. Looking ahead, team members will be travelling internationally to meet potential funders.
As we head towards the end of 2026, thank you for being part of our journey to restore Marion Island and protect its seabirds and unique wildlife.
