It feels like yesterday that we shared our plans to upgrade the Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) Ward at Rahima Moosa Mother and Child Hospital. Today, we are delighted to report that these improvements are complete, and thanks to your continued support, this special space is continuing to provide comfort, dignity and care to some of the hospital's most vulnerable patients and their mothers.
April is always a meaningful month for Footprints 4 Sam as we celebrate Sam's birthday and reflect on the legacy that continues to inspire our work. It felt especially fitting to mark this occasion by completing a project that supports mothers and tiny newborns during one of the most challenging and important periods of their lives.
To celebrate the completion of the upgrades, we welcomed donors, special guests and members of the media to visit the ward. During the event, Sister Rendani and Dr Joy Fredericks shared powerful insights into the critical role the KMC Ward plays in helping premature and vulnerable babies thrive. Guests were able to see first-hand how these improvements are benefiting both families and healthcare workers, while our team also spent time with the mothers in the ward, distributing essential items to support them during their stay.
The ward, which was originally upgraded by Footprints 4 Sam five years ago, has now received several important enhancements. Secure lockers have been installed to provide mothers with privacy and a safe place to store their belongings, while the kitchen has been upgraded to create a practical and welcoming space for mothers who may spend weeks or even months caring for their babies. Staff areas have been improved to support more efficient administration, and the bathrooms have been refreshed to ensure the ward remains clean, functional and comfortable for everyone who uses it.
These improvements may seem simple, but they make a meaningful difference to families facing long hospital stays. They also reflect our belief that healing environments matter. When mothers feel supported, cared for and comfortable, they are better able to focus on what matters most, caring for their babies.
In addition to these upgrades, Footprints 4 Sam continues to fund 24/7 WiFi access in the ward, helping mothers stay connected to their loved ones, continue their studies, access information and find moments of comfort during long days and nights with their little ones.
As always, we are incredibly grateful for your support. Together, we are creating spaces that bring dignity, hope and healing to families when they need it most.
Until next time,
Jo and the Footprints 4 Sam Team
