Dear Supporters,
This project marked the transition from Ebola response work to helping to rebuild and strengthen the health system in Sierra Leone, and we are off to a great start - thank you to everyone that helped raised over $500 in the first month!
Projects are already underway and your funds are being put to use saving mothers and children in a country with some of the worst child and maternal health statistics in the world. Your donations have helped us build on the work we did during the outbreak at the Ola During Children's Hospital and the Princess Christian Maternity Hospital. We now have a full time paediatric nurse and midwife supporting staff and providing training. Becky, our midwife, has just helped set up a triage system at Princess Christian with outstanding results: patients being correctly triaged has gone up from 43 - 82% and 32 nurses have received training in maternity triage!
Currently we are recruiting for a new midwife to continue this fantastic work and we will use funds raised here over the next 3 months to support this.
Our midwife will offer both formal teaching, through workshops and lessons, and mentoring and role modelling for other midwives and nurses. This teaching is vital to build the skills and confidence of local staff, whose existing training does not fully equip them to manage the complexities of clinical care required of a major maternity hospital.
The impact of our training will spread across the country. Since midwives and students are rotated through the maternity hospital as part of their training, our work has the potential to improve the quality of care for mothers and babies across many different healthcare institutions. This post will also support the development of Princess Christian Maternity Hospital being accredited as the first maternal health training centre in Sierra Leone.
This will mean that more mothers will live to enjoy watching their babies grow into healthy children, and staff will be better trained and more confident to provide better care for vulnerable mothers and babies.
Thank you for everything you have done so far and please spread the word so we can continue to support the hospitals, their staff and patients.
