Helping One Person At A Time

Jane receiving her 5 year implant
Jane receiving her 5 year implant

Jane – an alias of Laisamis, Northern Kenya.

Jane is a 32 year old widow with four children.  Jane lives in Anderi, which is found in Laisamis right the top of Kenya in the North. Jane works for as a house hold help for a school teacher in the nearby area. She earns a meagre KES 3,000/- ($35) a month.

CHAT’s nurse, Pauline, was cooling down under a tree whilst chatting away to some young men about condoms. When they saw Jane walking towards Pauline, the young men started shrieking and giggling “here she comes!” Pauline asked them what they meant by that but they did not tell her. Pauline shooed off the boys and called Jane over for a chat. Jane explained that people talk about her a lot because she is a widow but she is in a relationship with a married man. She asked Pauline to check her thoroughly. She was given a pregnancy test which came out negative, this made her decide to get a 5 year implant. Jane also wanted to know her HIV status, Pauline checked and confirmed the tests were negative.

After asking lots of questions and listening to what Pauline had to say, she then asked for four boxes of condoms! This all coming from a lady who had just been introduced to family planning and HIV tests made the CHAT team very happy.

As she walked away there were some women sitting beneath a tree pointing and laughing at her, she stopped and turned towards them, holding up her boxes of condoms for all the world to see and hear she shouted “I will not have sex without a condom again, if I had the option I would have the operation (BTL), you all sit there behaving like a snake not knowing your status and hiding behind all sorts of rubbish!” and with that she turned on her heel and set off into the distance with a spring to her step.

Thank you so much for all you kind donations. Each and every donation helps us reach these desperate communities with the services they so very badly need.
