CORP Emily sensitizing a client at Obaaria beach
CORP Emily sensitizing a client at Obaaria beach

*Not their real names

In the bustling town of Kendubay, where the shimmering waters of Lake Victoria meet the shores, a tale of transformation unfolds, starring two remarkable women whose lives intersected through a life-changing family planning intervention. *Awiti, a resilient 27-year-old mother, had endured the hardships of life from a young age. Her education dreams were shattered when she became pregnant, and her boyfriend abandoned her. She was left to navigate the struggles of single motherhood, working tirelessly at Obaaria Beach to prepare fish for a meagre income.

As fate would have it, Emily, a spirited CHAT’s CORP partner based in Kendubay, arrived at the beach one day. Her mission was to sensitise women about Family Planning, empowering them to make informed choices about their reproductive health. Awiti's curiosity drew her near as she overheard the fascinating conversation. Intrigued, Awiti joined the gathering of women and listened intently to Emily's enlightening words. Emily's passion and knowledge ignited a spark of hope within Awiti's heart. She learned about the benefits of Family Planning and how it could empower women like her to take control of their lives and dreams.

With Emily's guidance, Awiti decided to take charge of her future. Emily referred Awiti and two other women to Kendubay Sub-County Hospital, where they all received 5-year contraception. From that day forward, Awiti's life took a transformative turn. Liberated from the shackles of unplanned pregnancies, she embraces her newfound freedom while focusing on her small fish-cooking business. With her two daughters in mind, she remains determined to break the cycle of suffering and poverty.

Awiti's journey from despair to empowerment remains a testament to the impact of family planning and the unwavering dedication of remarkable individuals like Emily. Their chance encounter had forever altered the course of Awiti's life, and her gratitude towards Emily knew no bounds. Awiti is among many women and girls whose stories affirm the importance of family planning intervention in poverty eradication and mitigation of suffering.

Thanks to GG support, in the past three months, CHAT was able to reach a total of 12,301 individuals with behaviour change information (bcc). 3,859 fp clients received different contraception methods of their choice, of which 2,937 chose the long-term pregnancy protection methods of either 3 or 5 years - against unwanted pregnancies.

“When women are able to plan their families, they are better able to plan their lives."
