It was a busy time for the mobile clinic. The yellow clinic land rover made its way through winding, snake like roads, plumes of dust rose from behind the car as they dipped and swerved, making their way through unkind terrain. This trip was especially planned, the clinic was heading to Kirimon, Samburu east and Sirata, Samburu central. They were on their way to follow up on removal of implants. CHAT’s nurse, Pauline, had records from 2010 that were due their removals.
Once the team arrived, they hurriedly set up the tables and tents and laid out their gear and got to work, CHAT’s FPCORP’s, Rose and Susan, had already spent a few days in these communities mobilizing the women for insertions and removals, also speaking to the men and children to let them all know that there will be services for the day. They managed to gather quite a number of women who needed removals and re-insertions. Pauline began immediately, removals are a tedious task but none the less Pauline battled through passionately with a smile on her face the whole way through. There was one Lady called Jane who had had a fight with her husband, he had grabbed her arm and broken the implant, it took some time but Pauline managed to get every piece out.
Darkness came and Pauline was still battling away, eventually her endless energy came to a sticky end, arms weak, hungry and tired they asked those who weren’t attended to, to please come back in the morning.
There was a line of ladies waiting for their turn before the birds began to chirp the next day. Pauline smiled with a large cup of sweet tea and said “Well what are we waiting for”
