More space for young adult birds for pre-release conditioning!

All babies that come into our care require time in an outdoor aviary prior to release back to the wild.  This is a critical component of their overall development as it provides them with the opportunity to develop flight muscles, to be exposed to outdoor conditions, and to become familiar with sharing space with other similar birds.  The majority of baby bird patients will spend 2 weeks in an aviary after being weaned from hand feeding.

Based upon analysis we performed at the end of last year, we discovered that having more outdoor aviary space would provide the opportunity to move more baby birds outside allowing them to get back into the wild sooner. The tracking system we have in place allows us to monitor all of our baby bird patients as they advance through the weighing and weaning process in order to forecast readiness and availability of our outdoor spaces.  We have also expanded our partnerships with other rehabbers to have additional space available off site to provide more variety and options for our birds to thrive.

While it is not our goal to increase the number of patients we treat, we anticipate that with these improvements we would be able to provide care for more patients should the need arise. Our generous supporters last year donated funds for materials to expand our outdoor aviaries. As a volunteer-led organization, all of our labor associated with efforts such as this is donated. We partner with local resources to supplement our existing volunteer pool so we can implement projects during the down season.
