July to October - 101 Birds Back in the Wild!

The months since our last report have brought long-awaited releases, remarkable recoveries and new challenges for Belize Bird Rescue. From July 1 to October 26, we admitted 87 new patients and celebrated 101 successful releases back into the wild. We are currently caring for 230 birds, most of them parrots undergoing rehabilitation for release or living in permanent sanctuary because they cannot safely return to the wild.

Every release represents a different journey. Some birds recover from injuries in a matter of weeks; others spend months or even years developing the strength, flight skills and independence they need to survive in the wild.

Among our recent releases were some of the young parrots that had been in rehabilitation since the 2025 baby season, alongside owls and other raptors, toucans, waterbirds and those gorgeous smaller ‘songbirds’.

All have amazing stories, and each is a reminder of what patient, specialist care can achieve when an injured wild bird is given a chance. You can catch up with these stories and more in our monthly newsletters.

Members of the public remain our biggest rescuers, although we also received nine confiscated parrots as the Forest Department began its inspections following the closure of the parrot permitting programme.

Caring for more than 200 birds requires a constant supply of suitable food, medication, veterinary treatment, transport, staff time and safe enclosures. Many patients need weeks or months of care, while birds that cannot be released depend on us for the rest of their lives.

Your donations to Saving Belize’s Birds help fund the everyday work behind every rescue, recovery and release. They allow us to respond when a bird is injured or confiscated, provide the specialist care it needs, and prepare rehabilitated birds for a return to their natural habitat.

Thank you for standing with Belize Bird Rescue and helping us give Belize’s wild birds the care, time and second chances they need. Every bird that returns to the wild is a reminder of what we can achieve together.

With our warmest regards and gratitude,

Nikki and all at Belize Bird Rescue
