The second quarter is our busiest and most rewarding time of the year. As this baby season arrived across Belize, we admitted 160 wildlife patients, including 74 parrots, and we hand-raised 98 orphaned babies.
During the same period, we celebrated the release of 52 rehabilitated birds back into the wild. While every release is a milestone, many birds require months or even years of rehabilitation. As June came to a close, 279 animals remained in our care, including 78 permanent sanctuary residents.
Our field conservation team continued monitoring wild parrot nests alongside the Belize Forest Department and rescued six chicks at immediate risk from poachers—four Yellow-headed Amazons and two White-fronted Amazons. These youngsters are now being raised with the goal of returning them to the wild.
This quarter also marked two important milestones for conservation. The national captive parrot permitting programme came to a successful close, and the proposed Wildlife Management and Protection Act passed its first stage toward becoming law, paving the way for stronger protection of Belize's native wildlife.
To keep these reports focused on the impact of your support, we share many of our rescue stories, rehabilitation successes, and releases through our monthly newsletters. Visit our Newsletters page to read the latest edition and browse our archive of past newsletters.
As always, we are deeply grateful for your continued support. Every rescue, every recovery, and every release is possible because of donors like you. Thank you for helping us give Belize's birds a second chance and protect future generations of wildlife.
With our warmest regards and gratitude,
Nikki and all at Belize Bird Rescue
