We are heading into the last quarter of 2024. That has gone by so quickly!

I can’t believe we only took in 45 patients, it feels like way more than that as many of them were quite challenging cases and we had a lot of baby parrots to hand-raise too. We took in 17 additional parrots which included 3 injured fledglings, 2 confiscations, 5 surrenders and 6 who had escaped from captivity.  We had 3 raptors and 6 waterbirds and the rest were songbirds or forest birds like toucans, trogons and flycatchers. All but 6 of the rescues came to us via our awesome Belizean public. They are by far our most vigilant rescuers!

We made 41 releases consisting of our whopper group of 11 collared aracaris, 13 parrots, 17 forest/songbirds, 3 raptors and a pelican.

Our volunteer transport network also came through for us this quarter. BBR travelled 1,600 miles for rescues alone, but our volunteers covered an incredible 2,400 miles. Thank you to them all!

This quarter also saw the end of the field work for the yellow-headed Amazon project. You have probably seen posts of the ups and downs of the field team. They were incredible, covering most of the country to count parrots in every kind of weather condition from drought and fires to floods and mud. Thanks to their dedication and expertise, we now have the data we need to create an updated population assessment of this endangered endemic species. It’s 8 years since the last survey and we are anxious to find out how the species is doing and if the conservation efforts in place are having a positive effect. We hope to be able to share the report with you before the end of the year.

As of the end of September we are caring for 178 birds, all but 6 are parrots undergoing long-term rehabilitation for release or are in permanent sanctuary.

You donations through GlobalGiving and other platforms provides our core source of funding, especially when it comes to our day-to-day operations amounting to an annual operating budget of $120,000US . We cannot ever thank you enough for your individual and recurring donations. Your generosity really does keep us afloat and we definitely couldn’t continue do what we do without you.

With warmest regards and our gratitude for your continued support and generosity
