Saving America's Horses

“America's horses are disappearing and along with them goes a part of us, says filmmaker, Katia Louise. “We can't bring back those we've lost, but we have the power to make a difference for generations to come.” In an effort to save, protect and preserve wild and domestic equines, as opposed to the promotion of horse slaughter and widespread roundups throughout the American West, Saving America’s Horses’ Director, Katia Louise is calling on members of the public who care about the horses and the environment to join in a united stance for the horses with Saving America’s Horses by sharing information about this important cause with their networks.

WFLF Saving America's Horses' speaks to the need for protection of America's wild and domestic horses and burros both locally and on a national level. We are adamantly opposed to slaughter.  Strong federal protection for these animals through a permanent federal ban against slaughter in the U.S. is needed to put an end to their exportation from the U.S. for slaughter in foreign countries. Without federal protection more than 100,000 wild and domestic horses and burros are trucked across U.S. borders for gruesome slaughter each year.

America's wild horse and burro population is under direct threat by these issues as well. In May of 2017 the United States, Department of the Interior, Bureau of Land Management (BLM) released their 2018 “BUDGET JUSTIFICATIONS” with a call for approval of proposed provisions that if passed would strip protections and effectively allow the BLM to shoot and kill wild horses and burros and sell wild horses and burros for slaughter. The Senate has yet to vote on this BLM/ DOI budget proposal. Their vote is anticipated to take place toward the end of this summer

Why this is Important:

In the absence of federal protection, over 100,000 American wild and domestic horses and burros are shipped across federal borders to slaughterhouses each year. Wild horses and burros are rapidly diminishing in the wild and there is no guarantee of humane treatment for any equines in America once they are labeled for slaughter. Special interests are aggressively targeting American tax dollars to re-open horse slaughter in the U.S. The public health risks are many; the health and environmental impacts are grave. The public has been duped and we believe the public deserves to know the truth.

Saving America’s Horses, the documentary film spotlights these urgent global environmental and humanitarian crises. This powerful film contrasts shots of noble, beautiful, galloping animals with well-researched, shocking statistics and brings to screen a searing indictment of special interests and governmental agencies involved in the predatory exploits of America's horses.
